Nail Trim YIKES~

    • Silver

Think about how many times you will be doing his nails. Since he's a Dane (I'm assuming) let's figure eight years. Trimming once a week for eight years means 416 nail trims.

It would be so worth it to desensitize him to the noise of the dremel. Even if it takes five or 10 sessions to get him to accept. Good tips on desensitizing on doberdawn's website.

This little baby monster is NOT going to get the best of me.

    I think!

That's the spirit!  That's my attitude too.  No way am I going to have to constantly pay a groomer to do something that needs to be done so often!  And I've always been big on teaching my dogs to tolerate ALL handling I may need to do to their body.  I figure someday it may save their life.

Try doing his nails on a low grooming table. I have zero clue why this helps But I can pop the RRs up on mine, turn my back and pull a paw froward and the jon stresses everyone so much less.  In the house we have to hog tie a couple of them !

Just ordered a new dremel please God Let it get here Really SOON !!

Yeah but...here is what I did!   I found a little cheap kit that I picked up at a discount store a couple of years ago.... it is like a tiny dremel....its battery and not very powerful. BUT I thought I would try it out. So I did.... little monster spent 10 mintues barking at me...crying when I tried to hold him. Shoot...then he spent another 10 minutes jumping around because I brought the snacks out.  I couldn't keep him still enough for anything.  Finally fed him tons of snacks ( great when you are not supposed to let a Dane grow very quickly ) and got him on my lap...and did his back foot...ONE that is.  He actually let me after a while...while he was looking at the box of snacks..... BUT then I had a heck of a time trying to do the other. But this one might not have been powerful enough.....it did'nt take much off even though I could see that it did do some.    I'm not positive this is going to work... I'm going to work at it for a while before I go spend money on the "real thing!"

Oh by the way...did I mention that when I have him on my lap...I can hardly see over his head to see the derm nails?????    It only was okay when he looked to the side...so NOW I'm cutting in on the time he is still.

LOL he'll get it Dyan I do like the images though Big Smile

And don't worry about using a ton of treats once in a while.

If you haven't looked at it check out the dremel link I posted.

Teach that silly boy 'touch' and then use that to get him more familiar with whatever you want him to be OK with.  Once Bugsy had the 'touch' command I used it for all sorts of things.  Anything he is a little wary of I hold out and say touch.  As soon as he touches it I give him a treat.  Once he touches it his curiousity is peaked I let him investigate and all is good.

Bugsy never barked (still not vocal) but man oh man did he mouth me while I tried to do his nails, all while wriggling away, I am not into the whole 'alpha' 'dominant' thing but it was quite clear that he thought he could prevent me from doing them - perseverance!

Hmmm, sounds like he is a candidate for the refrigerator/peanut butter trick. Actually does not have to be a frig, just a flat cleanable surface. Smear peanut butter on the surface, and while your dog is busily licking, you can do some nails. Refresh as needed. With practice you probably won't need it, but it's a good way to start. Could be done standing or laying down.

Or if you have an extra person they can keep the treats or peanut butter coming.

Doberdawn likes to lay them on their side with their backs to a wall. Then if they push away they aren't going anywhere.

At my house, my dog could lay on his side with his back against the wall and nose towards the washing machine, which could be smeared with peanut butter, squeezy cheese, etc. Any place at your house that would work like that?

I did and I saved it beside reading it.

Two things.... it seems that perhaps a big one like she has ( which is probably like the one I bought and took back ) is not good for a puppy. She said to use a smaller one you can charge. That also makes me think,,,the one you guys are talking about at WalMart that is rechargable...probably won't be so great for him when he is full grown. Those Dane nails are really thick.   I went to get a hair cut today at my friends...and she told me she would pick me up one at her beautys supply. Then told me about the one that she saw on the Internet that is about $59 but she didn't buy it because it only has a 90 day warrantee.

I have the cordless rechargeable Mini Mite like on the doberdawn website, and it works just fine for my German shepherds. I found the low speed (5000 RPMs) too slow, but the high speed (10,000 RPMs) to be perfect. I prefer the coarse sanding bands to the medium ones, and I got an extra battery too, so I can switch it out between dogs. I bought my Dremel  at least 5 years ago at Walmart - it still works great and amazon.com has all the accessories.

I got my Mini Mite yesterday and it only had 2 wire brushes so now I have to go find a sanding drum before I can start working with the dogs.  Thanks for the smeared peanut butter trick, never heard of that one before, might help me work on Indie's back feet without needing my daughter to help!

So these are tools that are made for other things besides dog nails..........   I put Mini Mite in SEARCH to compare prices and I thought I was looking at the wrong things...but went back into Dawn website.

Where are you guys buying them from?  The website said the Multi Pro for larger dogs... looking at the price... I might be better off getting the Oster that is sold at PetSmart with a coupon that I have.

I never got to WalMart to check out what they have..a lot of people are saying that is what they purchased.  Is it in the tool section? OR is a nail grinder?  I think I am confused!

     Here you go:

    Dremel Minimite

I used Site to Store and had it shipped to my local store.  You'll have to get the sanding drums separately, mine didn't have them.  I'm still looking, can't seem to find them anywhere.
