Cold sores on Nose?(More to add)

Crusher's brother has developed 3 spots on his nose since Friday(ish).  One is open and looks like a coldsore.  Apparently my friend put peroxide on it and it dried up, crusted over and then Eclipse took it off while freaking out that one of her other dogs was going on a walk without him.  They don't seem itchy, he's not scratching, but he is licking them so they could be.  The other twist is he has quit eating Acana.  She even tried to mix it in with EP Holistic and he PICKED through and ate the EP and left the Acana.  Could he have developed an allergy to something in Acana, and would he know?  Have you heard of any allergies that cause a bumpy nose?

    Other points:

    • there's still lots of snow where he lives.
    • he has majorly thick long fur, but she's fairly sure there are no other bumps on him.
    • The bumps are about the size of a nickle or quarter
    • They've had a water change, extra iron, but the other dogs are fine.
    • Nobody else has spots
    • Eclipse is a husky in case you didn't know
    • She also has 3 GSD's and one more husky
Thats all I can think of.  any ideas?

I'd be concerned enough for a Vet visit honestly. Some auto immune disorders start with nasal ulceration. If he is not a food burier...eve trying to bury in carpet...doesn't eat from a plastic bowl...has nose pigment so solar dermatitis isn't a big concern...I'd definitely want him looked at.

How are his paws and eyes? totally normal? when was he last vaccinated? any stressful changes in the home...new dogs/babies/boyfriends?

Hmmm...he does bury his food, well, raw food anyway, if he doesn't want to finish it.  He's got a black nose, like Crusher, but its kind of snownose right now.   Umm...she has 3 dogs under the age of 1 currently, so Zia is the only other one that was there before last summer.  She's got Tundra who is I think 8 months and has been with her since he was 8 weeks, Charlie who is the same age as Tundra, but has only been there since she was 4 months, and Loki who is ...16weeks maybe?  She also lost Echo, her lead dog a few months ago, as well as the cat so there have been huge changes in their lives.  Oh and they moved from Tbay to here too.  I think he gets vacs in the summer, not sure, but I know he is UTD.

If it were me,just the fact of it being an open sore would really bother me.I would take him to a vet before it gets infected.

I agree with rwbeagles. There are autoimmune diseases such as pemphigus and discoid lupus where nasal lesions are one of the symptoms.

     Thanks, I'll let her know.

LOL, this vet has already mentioned adding a wing on to his practice in her and her mom's name because of the number of issues with their dogs in the last couple years.  I hope its nothing serious.

some dogs bury food..or dig under fencelines and get rub spots from that...these are like carpet burns kinda and a bit different than a blister or ulceration with a roundish or oblong shape, soupy middle and such..

Vet will be able to tell the difference tho! Good luck to the pupper!

Eclipse is at the vet this afternoon.  Hopefully its something easy.  Jen has found out that one of the symptoms of Blasto is skin leisions, and two dogs in her area have had blasto, one died.  So fingers crossed.

Well, Clayton seems to think its some sort of infection and Eclipse is on antibiotics.  It does not appear to be anything too bad, and certainly not Blasto.  Thank goodness.

Awesome!  Here's hoping he heals quickly! :)

So Eclipse's nose healed up nicely.  The sores are gone as is the medication he was on.  Apparently he went back to eating his regular food while he was on the meds, but since it has ended, he has quit eating it again.

    There's more though.

He's not himself.  He seems, to strangers to be a very alert and energetic dog, but to Jen(my friend) there's a marked difference in him.  He's, in her words, more wimpy.  He let out a pretty good yelp the other day when he tried to take off after a squirrel and hit the end of his leash.  Granted that could be any number of things, maybe his fur got caught in the clip, who knows, but its not a normal thing.  He's also getting grumpier with the other dogs.  He'll still play, but when they start to get rough, he puts them in their place right away.  He's been panting after short runs when the other dogs aren't.  He hasn't blown his coat yet, so he may just be hot, but it doesn't seem right.

The worry of Blasto keeps increasing, but the vet still doesn't seem to think thats possible.  Its not as likely as the ground has been frozen.

The other thing we've been thinking of is stress.  Can stress do this to a dog?  Jen lost Echo not long ago and she was the Alpha Bitch.  She raised Eclipse and all of a sudden, Eclipse has been thrown into Alpha as her other dogs are either pups or, well, Zia who is NOT alpha material.  (the dog walks into trees...)  Tundra came before Echo died, but he's only 9 months?  Maybe?  Charlie came later on, but is the same age as Tundra.  Loki is the newest addition and he's a few months younger, so its been quite a change in pack order for Eclipse.  Plus they've moved.  I know I've said most of this already, but this is really bugging me and I'm reviewing in my own head, as we thought it was over with the disappearance of the sores.

Gina, you mentioned Autoimmune diseases?  I don't even know where to begin looking for those.  Do you have any examples?  He goes in to the vet again tomorrow at 4:30, I hope something gets answered.

Here's some links about pemphigus and lupus, which are the most common auto-immune diseases. Sorry you have to copy and paste, but I can't link on this forum.

It almost sounds like he's in pain. I'll keep him in my thoughts; sure hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks, I read the stuff from the links off to Jen last night.  I would have sent them to her, but she's got dial up and was on the phone with me...lol.

They both made me nervous not only for Eclipse, but for Crusher simply because it appears both diseases are genetic and Crusher and Eclipse are littermates.  Both dogs have crazy snow noses this year too.  My beast's is fading though, so that's good.

I'm waiting to hear what Clayton had to say now.

Oh and I found out this morning that the dog next door to me had Blasto last summer...yikes!  Why the heck did I move here?

    • Gold Top Dog

You're welcome; I learned about auto-immune diseases about four years ago when Jessie had strange symptoms and my vet didn't know what it was; her head was swollen on the left side and the skin on her nose had turned red and developed blisters, and there were sores on her eyelids and muzzle. Blasto was one thing I considered but my vet said it was rare in our area. I'll check later for an update on Eclipse; sure hope he'll be okay.

I haven't heard from her yet.  I find it annoying when I'm not the first priority...Confused

We thought blasto was uncommon around here, but all of a sudden, its coming out of the woodwork.  Two of her neighbors have had dogs with it, one died.  And I live about 20 miles away and in the middle of the town, and my neighbors dog, who never even goes for walks had it last year.  That really worries me.   She also knows of another dog that had it, survived, but had to be on treatment for 6 months, at about $900 a month for a 40 lb dog.  That terrifies me because I don't honestly know if I could afford to treat Crusher for that much especially since it apparently goes by weight.  I love him dearly, but we only have one income right now, with 2 kids and another on the way.

Anyway, this thread is about Eclipse, not Crusher.  I hope I hear something soon.
