Baths - How often?

    • Gold Top Dog

As needed, which isn't very often.  He hasn't had a bath since the summer and right now our park is a big mudhole....every day he gets covered in mud and I think "I really should give him a bath..." and then I am overwhelmed by pointlessness since we will just be going back to the park tomorrow.  I end up just brushing the mud out.

    He smells fine.

it varies for us - Bugsy has a very short coat and no smell and doesn't roll around in nasty stuff.  He can get pretty dirty when he plays with his dog friends but it just brushes out once dry.

I do tend to bathe him in the summer/spring when we have been out in the woods or tall grasses with a neem shampoo that is supposed to help with ticks.  But still never more than once per month because I don't want to dry his skin out.

I do however change his collar frequently.  It is very exposed and gets FILTHY when he plays with his dog friends.  I must have 5-6 collars in the rotation all nylon ones that go straight in the washer.

If for any reason his allergies have caused dandruff he gets a medicated bath ( last time was Oct.)

Lillie gets a bath at least once a month.

Cheyanne gets a good bath in the summer  but she is outside most of the time so that's all she gets.

Jayde gets a bath when I need/want to take her somewhere.

Kujo gets a bath when she needs it.

Still working on when Ginger needs to be bathed. She's broken coat so I dont want to mess up the texture of her coat.

Now in the summer Cheyanne, Lillie, and Jayde get hosed down when it's really hot out or if we just got back from bike riding/running. They lay down and let me spray them willingly after a nice run.

I bath Kirby as needed which seems to be about once a month.  His coat is good about not holding dirt/matting and I never notice a bad dog odor on him, but he has a tendancy to start to get a little nappy along his ear/chest fringes after a month or so.  I think some of it has to do with all the humidity down here in South Florida. I only bathe my cairn as needed which is usually about four times a year. Winter time bathing is rare. He does not have a smell unless it is raining and he's outside playing in it.  I just towel dry then, since it is only wet doggy smell.  He does like to hunt frogs in the muddy river pools filled with algae and gunk.  We do not go there often, but when we do he definitely gets a bath when we get home.

Riley probably averages one bath every six to eight weeks (plus an additional "rinse-off" any time he's gotten into something really nasty or muddy).  Prior to getting him, I had experience only with Goldens, and I'm constantly amazed at how well his coat repels water and dirt.  We refer to my parents' current Golden as a walking dust mop because he'll go outside, roll in leaves, and then bring all of the leaves back inside with him.  Things just roll right off Riley, and he stays remarkably clean and smell-free most of the time.

On average, I bathe Emma about once a week. Lately, it's been more often, since she's extra

itchy from a vaccine reaction. Teenie was bathed 2-3 times per week. I am a pet groomer, by

profession. I use very high quality products, and my dogs are not dry, at all.  Emma's coat

is definitely too soft, for a broken dog, but I shave it instead of stripping it, so it'd be soft,

anyways. I mostly bathe(d) them so often because they're itchy dogs. Emma sleeps in my bed,

and Teenie had a tendency to pee and sit in it, so she required lots of baths.

I try not to bathe too often, I don't think it is the best for their skin. I at least try to do one every 2 - 3 months. In the summer they swim alot, I might give a gentle soapy to get residue off their skin after. I only send my Goldens to the groomer 2 times a year I try to maintain them between visits. It is funny you mention the Golden being a walking dust mop. Maxine is the opposite. She can come in COVERED in mud and filth, but within a very short time she is clean as a whistle. She grooms herself like a cat. The only thing I really have to do is watch when she is blowing her coat, for mats.

Tootsie goes to the groomer once a month. She is brushed daily, but if you own a corgi they shed A LOT.

Once a week. It is great for an allergy dog. Also, long haired dogs can get matted when the hair is not kept clean. The skin is fine, you just use good shampoos and conditioners.

During the summer we play hose in the back yard a lot and he swims a lot (clean water)

Where do you take him swimming?  I was told to take Mystic swimming to help her hips but the only place I know that I can take her is Blair's Valley and people have me worrying about the muskies in there (I've seen some and they can be quite big).

Well my 'big' dogs (Cocker Spaniel/Basset hound mix, and Black Lab mix) get bathes about once every three months.

My Chihuahua gets bathed about once a month. For two reasons: 1) He is much easier to bath because he fits in the sink and tends to like water, and 2) He tends to need it more since his favorite activity tends to be digging through our burnable garbage pit. (not when its burning of course)

Sasha gets bathed once a week. I have her in 'full' puppy coat so I really think she needs it. Also, when you live in Puerto Rico dogs get smelly/dirty very quickly. The grass is always wet so she gets stained and wet very often. By the time the week is up she is a mess!

    TWICE A YEAR.

Once before Christmas (December) after the summer coat is completly blown and again May-June after the winter coats are blown.  Then they go to the gromer and get the works!  If they roll in something inbetween we hose them down with a little soap but that doesn't happen often.

My dogs love it when they are clean, you see it in there faces.  Like people, they do like being clean.  According to my Vet too much bathing is not good for the skin.  I know people with smaller dogs do it more, with cuts and all but we don't need to much more than when we do.

FYI Carla:  My dogs don't smell like wet dogs after they have been groomed its as they get dirtier that there smells get worse.
