Hand Stripping in Winter

    • Gold Top Dog

When I strip, the outer coat comes out and some of the undercoat.  I do not strip to the bare skin.  When I have accidently stripped to the bare skin in spots, then my cairn got a hot spot there if it was hot weather.  Leave some undercoat; the outer coat starts to grow and show in a week.

I use a scissors to trim face, ears, legs, paws, belly, and to shape the tail.

I must add that for the first time (one month ago) I used a furminator as well as the stripping comb.  It drastically cut the time it takes to do this.  I got it all done in one afternoon.

When I lived in the upper Midwest my cairn blew his coat once a year, usually in the month of March.  Now in Texas the cairn I have blows his coat twice a year.

Indy05 - thank you so much!  And thanks for the furminator tip.  We use it on our Mainecoon cat - and will try it on the Cairn.
