Marley went in this morning!

    Marley went in this morning!

We took Marley in this morning to have him neutered. I don't know why, but I feel bad about it. We aren't going to breed him (because I didn't want to go through all that has to be done with showing him and whatnot). So, this is the best thing for him. He's never been a really bad dog...it was just time to have it done.

My husband had a dog that had so much swelling after this procedure that the dog died. I think that is why we waited so long. Marley is 2 years old. I know this is what is best, but then why do I feel so bad about it?

Awwww, try not to worry or feel badly about it. I'm guessing that some of your feelings come from thinking that it wasn't absolutely, positively necessary, but it really was the best thing you could do.  I think that complications are rare, so I'm sorry about your husband's previous dog, but I'm betting Marley will be just fine and home recuperating with you soon.  Hang in there and try not to worry [:)]

Thanks...we just called, and he is having x-rays done right now (to check his hips and elbows)...then he goes under the knife. I just keep telling myself he is going to be a happier dog![:o]

I was a worry wart myself for both spays.  I am sorry about the complications your husband's dog had but I think Marley will be fine and back to his regular self in no time. Sending ear scritches for him and comforting hugs for you.

I felt the same way last summer when we had Murphy neutered. Worried about the surgery, feeling bad for him, etc. He came home a little sore but he was soon back to normal. I'm sure Marley will be okay. Be sure to post an update when it's over, okay?

We get to pick up Marley in an hour! I'll post again when he is home. Hopefully, he made it through the night okay. I made him some special treats yesterday!

Yay, glad to hear Marley's coming home and I'm sure you are too.  I hope to hear that he's doing fine and not holding a grudge [;)]

He's back...but crying a lot. Could he be in pain? It looks painful! He's definately not himself. Can I give him some doggy asprin? I have some for when he gets cold water tail.

You know we discussed on a different thread some time back.  Some folks thought that the pain would keep them from trying to do too much too soon.  Others (myself included) felt that they should be given pain meds for a few days after the surgery. If what you have is something you can safely give to him for pain, then I would definitely go ahead with it.  If you're concerned tho, you might give the clinic a call and ask if it's okay.  Poor Marley - I hope he feels better soon.

I am happy that Marley is back home but sorry he seems to be in pain. For the first night (and tomorrow), I agree with Cathy. If you have something safe to give him, do so. I hope he starts to feel better soon. Do not hesitate to contact the vet if you have any post-op concern or question.

Thanks for the advice & support. We called the vet and they said not to give him the asprin...but that they could give us something if it persists. He seems to be fine now, but a lot calmer than normal. He is, after all, a Lab. I'm used to him running around like a loon! Hopefully, he will cheer up soon and be a goofy lug again.

No pain shot and Rimadyl for this poor dog?
Anytime I get my males neutered there is always a supply for Rimadyl, and a pain shot.......also, I had a male German Shepherd that had severe swelling after neutering, I took him in and all was drained, he needed to stay there for 5 days , but was good as new.........keep checking the area, and make sure there is no unusual swelling, if there is, please....take the dog in asap.............

It's definitely weird after they have been neutered....I was used to my lab acting like a loon too, and for a few days he just didn't want to do anything.

He recovered just fine though, and I am sure Marley will too. [:)]

Here is an update! I was up all last night with Marley. Since he isn't allowed to jump, I got out his big travel crate, put his bed in there, and had him sleep in there e-collar and all. Now Marley is crate trained. He loves his crate...he will even go in it on his own to hang out. So, when he started whimpering at 2:00 am I knew something was wrong. I let him out, he made a beeline for the door, so out we went. He went out back and went a little diarrhea. Then he continued to walk around trying to go some more...but nothing came out. This happened twice. We are going to call the Vet as soon as they open...but what could be wrong? I gave him a smaller meal this morning. I figured smaller meals more often may help? I'm so worried.

Willowchow-He ate last night, but just a smaller meal.

I just checked the sutures...they are a little weepy.

Did he eat last night?  It was probably just too soon if he did--either way it's probably just from the anesthesia.
