• I think my dog had a stroke :( Syl Rivers Posted : 6/6/2006 12:34:55 PM Yesterday my dog was in the garden and had some kind of attack where his body curled up and then he lost the use of his back leg. I took him to the veterinarian and he said he didn't know for sure what was wrong and that it possibly was a stroke. He gave him an injection and some tablets. How can I know what's wrong with him? He cannot walk properly, he won't eat anything and he just lies down and is less responsive than usual. When the postman arrives in the morning he usually barks so loud to let me know, but today he didn't even bark or care, he just seems disinterested in everything now. Any ideas what could be wrong with him? Are these symptoms typical of a stroke? Please help with some advice, the veterinarian is not helpful at all... If so, pull them off. Sometimes ticks can cause symptoms like this. Seem this is the kind of thing that the vet should be trying to figure out...he sure doesn't sound like he did anything for his money on your trip. Try the tick thing,,but I have to ask if he had any medications lately?  Maybe his monthly heartworm pill?  Anything unusual to eat right before? Could he have gotten into something poison,,or was he out where someone could have fed him something poison?      Bee sting that he may be allergic to?  Grapes, chocolate?  Just some ideas to think about. He hasn't changed much, still cannot walk but he is eating again. Also I have noticed there is a lump on his leg, and today his leg has swollen up. Could this be caused by Ticks? • pofi_pasquale Posted : 6/10/2006 6:57:16 PM You didn't say how old your dog is, because some of the initial symptoms could be signs of a stroke or a substantive decrease in blood pressure (back legs being further from the heart will become profoundly weakened).  But the swelling on the leg seems to indicate something localized, like a tick or other insect bite.  You didn't say (and your profile doesn't indicate) what area of the country you live in. The blood tests were returned and there seems to be a liver problem, which can only (according to my vet) be concluded via an operation to cut a piece of liver away for analysis. There is no sticky substance in his blood (white blood cells?) and water is building up in his body, legs and stomach because the liver is not functioning properly. I cannot pay for an operation which is £600, he is being kept there overnight and is on a drip. • Syl Rivers Posted : 6/15/2006 7:17:29 AM Things just went from bad to worse. All his organs are failing: heart, kidneys and liver. He's being kept alive artificially now. The vet still does not know the cause and I guess i'll never find out what it was, but I do not think it's fair to keep him alive in this way. I've decided that i'm going to let him go today.
