Karen, how is Oliver doing? Is he still improving?

Wow! Thanks so much for asking!
When I saw this thread come up I thought I had to refresh lol.
I spent all of April doing tons of walking with him and May1st we got the go ahead for off leash. He's been a "Real dog" again, jumping and running and playing! Everyday we take about an hour hike on a trail next to a river and some days I bring him to swim at a lake down the street.
He does have pain in the "bad" left hip. He favors that leg, doesn't ever stand and put full weight on it and it never got enough elasticity back to pop it back in. The surgeon feels so guilty for all of this that he has offered to do FHO for free if and when we need it. We are not quite there yet, because he uses the hip and there is still a chance this increased activity can really get it to stay in place, but as time goes by that seems less and less likely. So... we've got a dog that had surgery for hip dyspalsia that STILL has hip dysplasia!!! The back right hip is real solid so I can see the benefits of a TPO done right...
I'm trying to supplement and excercise as much as I can to give him the best chance to keep that hip... he's on a diet too since he's gotten a bit chunky. I had been able to reduce the use of metamucil and the surgeon is hopeful that eventually he'll be able to go to the bathroom without it.
Anyhow... I'll stop rambling... thanks so much for checking on us!

Thanks, Karen, for filling us in! Thanks, Jessie's Mom, for asking!

I feel like such a heel but I have out of town company coming and I have got to get busy! I have SO much news on Murphy to share, opinions to gather, etc. We went for a pretty definitive surgery consultation today and I'm mulling like crazy.

Karen--you know he'll be great with an FHO. He will. When he needs it. Still--how much fun is his life now?! I think it's so wonderful and I am so happy (relieved) for you!

Murph is squeaking (and squeaking and squeaking) his ball right now so I guess I better get busy around here!

    More later.

It sounds like Oliver's doing pretty good. If the left hip doesn't stay in place it must be comforting to know that the surgeon will do the FHO for free; it's great that he made that offer. I hope Oliver won't need the FHO and that his left hip will stay in place; thanks for the update.

RAH!!  I knew most of this, but as long as there's hope there's HOPE.  That you are able to reduce the laxative is a GOOD thing!!!

hugs and scratches from Aunt Callie!! (hugs for you, too!!! *grin*)

So glad to see this thread and to hear Oliver is so improved!  Hooray for the little guy and kudos to you for lovingly seeing him through it!

thanks everyone! Seeing Oliver happy makes me happy!
I wish the bald spot on his back would grow back... but I'll take a tight hip first please [:D]

Nancy, now you've gotta post an update about Murphy!!

I do hope it never comes to an FHO, since he's so BIG for a surgery like that and his back right side is already cmopromised... can you imagine, with my track record and luck he'd come out of that one not being able to walk AT ALL!!

off to go take him to the lake!

I'm so glad to hear that Oliver is doing well, and that the surgeon is willing to help you out.
