Oh no,,, a Dane with diarrhea!!

Hi Folks... Oh no,,,,,,,,,,,,,   a Great Dane with the runs is NOT GOOD!  You know,,many times on this forum I answered questions about what to do with a dog with diarrhea,,,but now Bubby has it and I only have caplets...   of course she who eats EVERYTHING,,,,doesn't like them. BUT I got one down her,,,but I can't see one for a Dane.  We used to just pour out of the bottle, the liquid PB down Ollies throat,, (what a mess that was) but I just have caplets right now.  IT says 2 for adults,,,should I give her two do you guys think? Or more?   I don't know what is wrong with her. She had it a week ago after I gave her a rib bone,,with tons of meat on it...but that cleared up and she hasn't had anything to eat different then she usually has, and she has been fine.  She ate dinner,,,and it started not long after.  I did give her cooked veal on her kibble,,,its the first time she had veal.....it was on sale. She usually has beef, turkey or sometimes pork.     Its like WATER coming out of her,,,I feel so sorry for her. BUT she sure wanted the peanut butter that I put on the PB caplet.

Dyan, sorry to hear Bubby is under the weather.

You can try immodium at the human dose. That should clear it up in record time and get her feeling better. But if you could get another PB into her, that would be good.

Hope she gets to feeling better soon!

Poor bubby!! Been there done this one except Dutchess had it at the exact moment that little 6 lb reese decided to sniff her butt.We wont go into the details but EWE! She gets 2 of the chewable PB and then i give her another after she poops again. Also the pumpkin seems to really help.I withheld her food for a day and then started her slowly again.Hope he feels better soon!

We've always used Pepto...mostly because its the only thing I can take when I have problems,,,the other stuff makes me want to THROW UP!!!    But do you think Immodium is better?  I will buy her some tomorrow after work.

OH what a picture THAT is!!    How big is Dutchess taht she gets 2 chewables?    I will give Bubby another right now.  I used to be so much "gutsier" when I was younger...never thought twice about giving these meds.

Well, Bubby made it thru the night okay,,,slept all night. Got up galluping all over the place waiting for her breakfast.  I only made her 2 cooked eggs and some yogurt,,,,  rather then her usual 2 and 1/2 cups,,plus egg, plus yogurt for breakfast.....I really feel bad fasting her as she is so happy to eat and is running all over the place waiting for it....so she is satisfied for now.   Hopefully this doesn't turn into more diarrhea...    I can't imagine why,,,,,,,,but the only thing I did different is I gave her cooked veal rather then the usual beef, turkey or pork she gets on top of her kibble last night.   She never had veal...but I can't imagine that being the culprit but I guess you never know.

I hope Bubby is doing better this morning.

When Coal ate a bone a few years ago (yes it was cooked and I know better now !!) he had diarrhea for about a week off and on. Took him to the vet and he told me to give Imodium & Keopectate (sp??). My mom also gives this combo to their Daschund (sp??) Oscar who has a tumor on his behind that cant be removed and every now and then he gets it and the vet told my mom to do the same thing. Cant remember how much Coal got but it really helped.. We had to sleep in the kitchen/living room that had the tile floor for a while but we got thru it...

    hope she gets better soon!!!

    Well I don't get it.......
After having diarrhea starting around 4:00 pm on Wed.  and again in the evening...she didn't go at all yesterday. This morning at 6:30 AM she started out normal firm stools...and then by the end it was very very soft.  Then while I was picking it up, she was trying to push more soft liquidy out.  That is the way she started also on Wed... firm and then by the end it was soft and next time almost water. Not sure what to think.  She had been having pumpkin so that is not going to help I don't think. Someone suggested too much pumpkin after the rib bone incident...when I opened a can for that and then kept feeding it to her.   But can't really think that canned pumkin will cause problems.
Well, I fed her regular breakfast this morning,,,minus the raw egg.
Somehow,,,because I am NOT a "raw person" I keep wondering if it is not more then just digestive upset from the rib bone.    In the back of my head I think about something like bacteria or something from the meat itself OR raw egg she gets every day.
And I wonder if she is not feeling good or not...she seems to be acting normal.

if you gave her pepto or imodium it will "solidify" the stools, but not take care of the underlying problem, so once the drug is out of the system the problem may recur. Many folks suggest just letting the dog/human with the trots let it run its course to wash out the offending food/bacteria. And don't feed the dog until it's done. Sounds harsh, but important. A big Dane isn't in danger of dehydration from a few days of diarrhea.
I think it's the veal myself. My dogs won't eat veal at all. They do nasty things to those veal calfs, and I suspect the meat is tainted with the chemicals they feed the poor things. If it was the rib bone it would have hit within 48 hours of eating it.

Yeah,,, I gave her P.B. on Wed.   Could see them come out in her stool this morning. You probably hit the nail on the head...her stool was darkened from the PB and then by the end when it was soft,,,,it was regular.
UGH,,, she just asked to go out again. Sure enough...more liquidy stool.  I suppose her breakfast got her started again. darn!!!   Its so hard to not feed her when she knows that it is time and is running around all hyper!!
