    Xerxes just ate 20 wings...help

Xerxes just ate 20 chicken wings...stole them off the counter when my roommate wasn't looking.  Why me?

Do I wait and see if everything is ok?  Do I take him to the E-vet now?  Do I induce vomiting?  Help please.

    Thanks in advance.

My god Xerxes, you managed to steal 20 chicken wings!!! What a chow hound you are!

Were the chicken wings cooked or raw? If they were raw you shouldnt have a problem if they were those spicy wings hes gonna have a serious tummy ache.

    How long ago was this?

i think i would call the e-vet if not take him.........chicken bones are dangerous to dogs.......at least call the e-vet

A lot of what I would do in this situation would depend on whether they were cooked or raw.  If they were raw, I probably would just wait and see.  If they are cooked, I believe I would hit the horn to the E-Vet.  I would not induce vomiting yet.

I have no advice, but I hope he's okay.

If the wings were raw, then no -- raw chicken wings  in that quantity are a bit over the top but won't hurt him. The spices may give him a gut ache.

If they were cooked then you have to worry about a splinter.  Watch for blood from either end -- vomiting or rectally.  DON'T have him vomit -- you don't want a splinter trying to tear both ways.

Your call about the e-vet -- much depends on how much oil was ON them or how he reacts to it.  He might pass it fine, it might puncture something IF COOKED (when you cook chicken bones they get brittle).

Counter-surfing dogs -- they are SO good at it.  Then you and I worry ourselves sick.  Good luck -- the e-vet is the safe way to go, but I don't know what your finances are.

Particularly if he starts vomiting GET HIM THERE.  Because if it's cooked bones they can puncture anything from throat to intestine and if he's throwing up the violent spasms could force a puncture.  Depends on how his system reacts to what he ate.  I hope that helps.  I'm gonna post this and email it for you.

I sure hope he's okay; keep us posted.

    The Morning After

Xerxes seems like he's acting normal.  No bowel movement this morning on our walk.  He did seem a bit more focused on the squirrels and other fuzzy creatures though.  He's drinking normally, maybe a bit more than normal.  And he is still being the mischevious little guy that he always is.  As soon as our vet opens I'm calling to see if they think I need to bring him in.

He had a bunch of gastric noises last night along with enough gas to destroy a corner of the ozone layer.  So we'll see how this turns out.

    Thanks everybody

Well Xerxes I had chicken wings last night too.  Mine were Old Bay wings but I didn't quite eat 20 of them.  Hope your belly gets all the gas out and your mom gets good news from your vet.  Be good and go easy on the counter surfing your mom gets worried when you do that.

Actually I'm Xerxes human dad.  His mom is a show dog down in florida.  [sm=rofl.gif]
I got a good giggle out of that, but I do worry like a mom, don't I?

first off, your dog is beautiful.
I'd love to own a pharaoh hound.

Second, were the wings cooked or raw?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yeah, I'm curious too -- raw or cooked?  (Don't worry -- we ALL worry! LOL)

Sorry bout that[:)]  I don't know why I assume that most posters are female.  Just for curiosity how do you pronounce your dogs name.  Maybe spell it out phonetically.  I just can't figure it out.  Also,  I assume that the wings were cooked, weren't they?  I understand why you don't want to answer that one though.  [sm=smack.gif] We all have things happen that we wish hadn't.  Jake ate a whole chicken breast that was my lunch off the table the other day.  Feel better now[;)]

    First Xerxes is pronounced "Zer-Sees"

Second: Those were some cooked, hot spicy wings.  He did eat one of the carrots, but left the celery behind. (imagine that!)

He's had two gigantic bowel movements today.  One was a diarrhea...inside PetCo.  Quite embarrassing, but it happens.  I'm not letting him out of my sight today, not for more than a moment.  And we aren't going to do the dog park tonight either, unless I've seen some bones in his poo.

Ok well I would have never in a million years got that one.LOL  Diarrhea is most likely from all the spices on those hot wings and I agree I don't think I would be going anywhere else either.  Did you call your vet?  Not pestering, just wondering.  I never really paid any attention to the poop after feeding Jake his raw chicken before but I don't recall seeing bone.  I geuss like I said I wasn't really looking. Hope your pup is OK.
