Vomiting Dog - Advice until my vet is open

My dog has been vomiting. Of course I'd call the vet, but it's late here so I'm hoping I can get some insight, maybe advice to help her through the night until the morning.

She had an accident this morning (bowel movement) which is unlike her but we thought she just didn't go when she was out, like she was supposed to.

Nothing happened all day until about 5/6 pm then she threw up. But then it became bile, yellow, and she has puked a total of about 4 times.

I got her to drink quite a bit after all of it except she did one more time. She is now sleeping, I am going to try to get her to rest for awhile.

I hope it's not a blockage like I was reading. I don't know how much it would cost to remove something - we are broke but I'd glady just charge the vet bills. She's my baby. However my husband does not see eye to eye on this and would have her put down.

I just pray that it's not that serious. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Thanks.

I wouldn't panic. Dogs throw up for a multitude of reasons. I'd fast her until tomorrow (sounds like she's resting anyway). You might start her off with some cooked chicken with rice if you have it. Otherwise, I'd give a smaller amount of her regular food and see how she does. Unless you have reason to believe there's a blockage (she's pacing, you see any blood, she's distended, etc.), then you could try the bland diet (chicken with rice) for 24 hours and then slowly start her back on her regular food. You can also give pepto bismol to dogs, but I'm not real sure of the dosage. If she's sleeping peacefully though, I think I'd leave her alone and just keep an eye on her.

Thank you, I need someone to calm me down. I panic because if something happened to one of my dogs I would lose it.

I have some chicken I could thaw, I think I'm out of rice, but maybe I could just cut up a bit of chicken for her later tonight. I read about pepto, I thought I would go get some in a couple hours when I run to the store. I didn't want to leave her so soon after the vomiting episodes. I might try that.

Drinking water is good so that she doesn't dehydrate,,,but sometimes drinking too much makes a dog vomit,,,mine did yesterday after drinking too much! If she throw up again,,,,maybe an ice cube will help. And of course Cathys right about the bland food.
Sometimes our pets get sick,,sometimes for no good reason. Just like us humans. Just watch her.
We used to give Pepto Bismol to our dogs all the time,,,our Ollie (Great Dane) HATED HATED HATED it,,,it would take 3 of us to get some down him and in the end who knows how much he really got.
However my husband does not see eye to eye on this and would have her put down.

I would NEVER put my dog down because my husband said...I'd be doing everything I could to keep her alive. I know its expensive to have pets...but they are our reponsibility.... and no husband in the world would take mine from me. YIKES,,,sorry, I know that was a powerful thing to say,,but true!![/color]

No Dyan I see what you are saying. He loves our dogs but I tend to believe in the responsibility of it a little more. I don't care how much debt I aquire from it. He did tell me since I keep the budget, that it would be my decision. But our financial situation is another can of worms. Not the time to go there I suppose.

Back to Lily....she drank more, quite a lot, but it hasn't caused her to vomit. She hasn't vomited in quite some time (knock on wood) I offered her a little bit of the food as suggested but she didn't want it. She hasn't had interest in food, but I'm mostly making sure she has water. No other signs, no blood, no more vomiting, no shaking, and she was acting herself a little, doing her little "prance" when she was outside, wagging her tail. She does seem a little tired too though. She sleeps on our bed so I can further monitor her tonight.

Thanks again for your advice!! I'm hoping she's getting better but we'll see.

Maybe its working its way out of her system. I hope so! Maybe she got a hold of something that made her sick. One day I took Ollie to the dog park and he kept drinking out of puddles...and he was sick for weeks after that. He also used to get sick for at least a week after giving him his monthy Heartguard.....it took us a while to figure that one out.

Thanks! No vomiting yet! It's been probably... at least 3 hours now. She's been mostly sleeping. So far, so good. She's kept some water down so that's good too, hopefully no dehydration. It's almost midnight so I might get to bed, she'll follow me and sleep on the bed so I should hear her if she starts having problems. I'm hoping that if she makes it thru the night with no problems she'll be alright. I'll probably give the vet a call just to make sure though!

Well she did fine through the night but early she threw up again. She's really tired, but I can imagine since she hasn't eaten. She's kept some water down. My vet will open soon and I'll give a call, and I might try to feed her the chicken as suggested.

She is great! That morning after her 7am vomit, she slept a lot and acted tired. So I did as suggested here and fed her some cut up chicken breast. She hasn't eating in close to 24 hours, so I was happy when she gobbled it up.
Shortly after she was acting more like herself, and no vomiting anymore either! By that evening she was my ole girl again!
The vet pretty much just agreed that I watch her and if it happened again I could bring her in, but told me to see if she felt better after the chicken and kept it down. Also to make sure she kept some water down, which she did that morning as well.
I'm so glad it wasn't serious, I was worried about a blockage or something worse. I'm so glad by baby is better and back to herself again!

So glad your baby is on the road to recovery. Hopefully, she's had another good day. Ours has thrown up for no reason sometimes and it's scarry because we want to have them forever and when they can't tell us how they're feeling it's scarry and frustrating. Good luck !

Well she vomited again so I'm really scared. We woke up this morning to diahrea everywhere. I don't know if it was her, our other dog acted really guilty and Lily usually runs off when she does something like that but this time she acted like it wasn't there, so I don't know if it's her.

So I'm scared now because in less than a month we are moving to the U.K. She has to be in good health to go. We don't have anyone to leave her with so I pray that she is not having any serious troubles, and if something is wrong we can just get her what she needs and she'll be fine. Right now she's just laying down half asleep. She's been herself otherwise today and yesterday.

Have you had a chance to take her to the vet yet? I'd definately take her even if you called - if it were me, and I was moving soon, I'd rather take her in and have the vet look at her in person. WOW ! ! What a mess to wake up to. Almost sounds like she got into something that maybe poisoned her or something. Please let us know what the vet says or what you're going to do. Good luck ! !

No I'm taking her in in the morning. See all weekend she appeared to be fine until tonight. Now she is doing much better again, but the vet opens at 8 so I'm on the phone first thing. I'll be taking her in first chance they get to see her, and if they are booked I have a back-up vet. Even if she does fine all night I am still taking her in, because of the move and all. I hope she does fine thru the night and in the morning though, I'll feel better.

Glad that she had a good night. Hopefully, even though she's been sick on and off, it's something that's got to work it's way out of her system. But, I'm glad that you're taking her in just the same. They can probably give you meds, too, to help whatever it is along. Keep us posted today after you make your visit. Poor baby ! ! !
