    High Spay Cost *Update*

    Original Quote Without boarding:

    In House STAT Bloodwork/pcs/ts $67.99
    Surgery IV Catheter Placement $54.99
    Ovariohysterectomy less than 25lbs $219.50
    Laser Use, Level 1 $73.99
    Surgical Fluids $15.10
    Buprenorphine HCL Inj. Carpuject $41.95
    Deramaxx $28.25
    e-collar $15

    Totals $514.16

Someone told me about the Friends of Animals program where you purchase a certificate and the spay is only $90 + meds & antibiotics. So I called around to different hospitals and a lot of them were saying I had to of been a client since the beginning or at least a year (well this is not the case) so I kept calling around and one Hospital said they'd MATCH the price of Friends of Animals! WOOHOO! So I'm looking at less than $150 to spay total with everything!!! :D

Call a rescue, see who they recommend.

Also check on craigslist under PETS for your area.  Our 2 low cost spay '/neuter programs post on there regularly for our area.

Use Google and put in: low cost spay Hopkinton MA

    See what comes up.

Do you have any not for profit vet practices near you?  Those will be lower.  I took a few of my cats to Fall River for their spays and neuters.  Bit of a drive, but it was a one time thing, and the savings was significant.  Not convenient for using as my full time vet, for for spays, yep!

So I am noticing the low cost spays have to do with income which we are not going to meet the requirement. I'm going to look into the non-profit situation you just said (as well as call around).

I do not remember Spays being this expensive. $200 is what I was thinking so when I saw $600 I almost fainted. That just seems very high.

Is this where you went?! haha

I am def going to call these people in Fall River. It def would be worth the hike b/c the gas money plus the spay cost is far less than $600!! And there is no income restriction! woohoo!

Now with shelties you DO have to be careful of the sedative/anesthesia combo -- but I'm wondering if they do a lot of pre-op bloodwork??  That is insanely high **unless** they are doing a full blood panel.

If that's the case it should be about $120 -- but I'd want to know WHAT they were charging that kind of money for.  I'm betting they *demand* an overnight stay, etc.  In that case it IS insane.

Now we *do* always do a full blood panel on any newbie -- pup or adult.  I've been caught out too many times wishing I *had* done one so I knew what "normal" was on a dog.

Here is the bare minimum option broken down for this particular hospital:

    In House STAT Bloodwork/pcs/ts $67.99
    Surgery IV Catheter Placement $54.99
    Ovariohysterectomy less than 25lbs $219.50
    Laser Use, Level 1 $73.99
    Surgical Fluids $15.10
    Buprenorphine HCL Inj. Carpuject $41.95
    Deramaxx $28.25
    e-collar $15

    Totals $514.16

That is way too much there has got to be cheaper options. FIRST I am going to call around to other animal hospitals and then worst case I will go the non-profit route.

You have multiple pets, do you already have an ecollar for her size?  Can you use a onsie instead?  Many bichon folks do htis for the females and rarely even need a collar at all.  That's only $15, but it helps.

The Fall River not for profit vet is:  Sylvan Animal Clinic, part of Animal Rescue League of Fall River.  474 Durfee Street.  Phone:   (508) 679-6122

Seems the website is under construction at the moment.  Now at least you have the info here in this thread.

Their prices are inflated -- in-house bloodwork?  They could send it out cheaper.  CAthether placement $55???  $.29 for the cathether and $54 for knowing WHERE to put it?  That's nuts.  A cathether should be $15.

    It says it all at "laser" -- these folks like their toys and they have it figured out how much they have to charge per procedure to make the profit they want.  Yes, vets are businesses -- but I don't have to use a business this out for it's own profit;

Now -- in fairness -- what you've listed there is around $300 not $600 but there may be other charges (and I'm sure there are for stays at the vet, etc.)

The total of what you listed is $261.27, and I know I paid more than that for Luke's neuter, and he had a hernia repair at the same time. Is there something missing from your list?

The total of what you listed is $261.27,

I came up with $297.27 both times.  I think $300 is cheap.  I live in southern NH, about an hour away from Hopkinton, and I'd have a hard time thinking you can find something cheaper without wondering about the level of care/expertise.

So, where does the other $300 come from?  Or as you quoted $514, then where does the other $218 come from?  I wonder if they are charging you boarding fees to keep her after the spay?  That could be another $25-45 a day.  But what else?

    • Gold Top Dog
Ooops I left off the actually procedure which is $219.50, that's what brings it to $514
    • Gold Top Dog
I left off the actual procedure cost which is another 200 hundred dollars. And then it was about 600 with the boarding but without boarding it's $514

Yeah I think these prices are insane. $55 for a cathether?! are you kidding me?! give me the cath I'll do it for free... hahaha

Yes sorry about that. The cost of the actual procedure is an additional $219. I edited my post and fixed the mistake.
