Biceps Tenosynovitis (Bugsy)

I am relieved and ready. I had a long chat with the vet that will do the procedure and feel comfortable with him. We'll head out very early on Tuesday morning (its about an hour from here) and should be heading home by noon.

My vet has sent over the xrays and will speak to him prior to the surgery.

My only regret is agreeing to try the steroid shot and wasting another 10 days of his life!

I don't see any downside to having the scope and I don't see any upside of 'trying' anything else at this point.

If it is the tendon he will have some significant IMMEDIATE relief as it no longer will be connected and in the tunnel of bone it is currently in (similar to carpal tunnel). He will have 6-8 wks of leash only activity but that recommendation seems to vary. I will play it on the safe side but again I don't see a downside to this.

Thank you all for hanging with me on this  Big Smile

As long as you bring Bugsy that pair of jeans to keep him busy you should do fine! LOL

Once again -- you are just an absolute encouragement to me because you understand your dog SO well.  You understand him and you work WITH him and you go to bat for him.  Vets who only can see cookie-cutter procedures just don't help much sometimes.  (sometimes that's fine but sometimes it's not)

I hope every time you post something like this that people will LISTEN TO YOU.  Literally just as an example of what it is to stick up for YOUR dog.

There are times where you can just do the easy, typical thing.  But there are times when you really have to be your dog's advocate -- stick up for them and say "No -- we can NOT do that ... this dog NEEDS ________________".   You aren't trying to usurp the vet - you're just trying to make sure they understand what is really going on with THIS patient.

Thank you again everyone. The surgery has been pushed back to 3/5/13 because the Kenalog shot will have suppressed his immune system which not only reduces his immunity to infection but impairs his ability to heal. Thankfully the negative impact on him from the shot seems mostly behind us. He's super ridiculous and back to his exuberant happy self.

I had another opportunity to talk to the vet that will perform the surgery and feel even more comfortable with him. I know we have the rehab ahead but it is so wonderful to know he will be pain free soon enough.

Its been awful over the last month or so in particular.  He is much more himself again though - albeit still with the limp - but he's happy and goofy and hunting and destroying toys LOL

I was out walking on my own thinking just over a week and we'll be on the road to rehab, no more wondering what to do or hoping it just goes away. I haven't even had to give him pain relief since Monday I think. I am really lucky that nothing keeps him down or turns him grumpy :)

I'm glad the vet is thinking on both ends.  You may also want to give Bugs some milk thistle (or even SAM-e) simply to help detox him (particularly since it hit him so hard) just as a thing you *can* do that's not huge.  Heck mine get it even if I've just given heartworm prev.

Didn't realize that I never updated this:

The propofol did leak and that is what caused the swollen IV leg

He eventually had the procedure elsewhere  - his biceps tendon was torn and he had incurred some additional damage in the last few months so he needed some elbow work too

He is rehabbing now and is doing very well
