we are having the cortisone/lidocaine shot in the morning and the xray.

I spoke to my friend/vet today and will be going ahead with the surgery hopefully as soon as next week.

I feel quite relieved that soon enough my boy will be out of pain and that we will be on a path to recovery

Good news. Let us know how tomorrow goes. I'm worried he will feel so good with the short you won't be able to keep him calm until the surgery! Maybe you should ask for some doggy downers ;p

LOL Julie I am sure hoping that he feels GREAT by later today Big Smile (Um yes I am nearly as optimistic as he is!)

I am going to call the vet that I want to do the surgery later today, ask a few questions. If the answers are satisfactory we'll book him in for next Thursday.

Well shot has been done, they took 5 different xrays and took fluid from the joint.

xrays are clear as is the joint fluid (synovial fluid that surrounds the tendon)

This is good news but doesn't help with the diagnosis :(

The shot should help him within the next 24-48 hours and then he wants me to rest him for 4 weeks. I don't think I'll be resting him for four weeks because that is also about how long the shot should help for, I will want to know if it helps when he's active not on total rest.

I'll speak to the guy who I want to do the arthroscopic procedure tomorrow

I am getting worn out with it all - I was so hoping to feel more positive after today

I'm sorry this didn't give you more information Karen. I know you must be so frustrated. I hope the next 24-48 hrs provide some clues.

    • Gold Top Dog
How frustrating! Did you get copies of the xrays and stuff to show the other docs?

He's worse since the shot and drinking gallons of water. Spoke to the vet today who then wanted to see him.

Gladly, no fever and no outward sign of a negative reaction to the shot BUT no real way to know what is going on.

He went over his leg from toes up and got a flinch when trying to stretch the biceps muscle. Even a veteran veterinarian is surprised at the level of pain tolerance B has............he is toe touching and only slightly weight bearing on the leg yet no matter what you do he won't yelp and still wanted to kiss the doc.

I have to measure his water intake and report back on Thursday. We once again discussed options, there just aren't many so we are sill looking at the guy south of here to go in with the arthroscope. My vet is leaning towards contacting him to find out more about his experience in shoulders and arthroscopes. I was happy to hear him say that.

Another concern is that B has lost 10 lbs in 11 days. 5 since Thursday (it's Monday)

please keep my boy in your thoughts

please keep my boy in your thoughts

You know I will.  So worrisome, the thirst and the weight loss and of course the pain.  Can't wait till you talk to the other vet Thursday.

Karen I'm for sure keeping Bugsy in my thoughts. That is worrisome about the weight loss. Could the drinking of so much water be related to the shot? I know when they take oral cortisone it causes increased thirst. Hoping that you find some answers soon.

    • Gold Top Dog
    Hmm that is worrisome.

The thirst has to be related to the shot, he wasn't like this until after it. It sounds as if the steroid got into his system (similar to taking prednisone) so I hope it passes quickly. It's clear that isn't a normal response.

The weight loss surprised me and unsettled me. He is eating & pooping normally. He is flat but he's in tons of pain. He has always been so muscular I imagine a good chunk is that but so fast? I don't know I am trying not to worry too much.

I pray the shot hasn't damaged him in some way and that we can get to the bottom of the pain. His eyes are clear, coat is great, etc. it would be hard to think something is lurking. We also did a full blood panel a month ago and everything was in perfect range.

((((( Karen )))) I will be sending healing vibes to B; I'm so sorry that he's having such a rough time from the shot. I really hope the symptoms resolve soon.

    • Gold Top Dog
(((Karen and Bugsy))) - I absolutely have you both in my thoughts and prayers. I feel hopeful that as the shots affects wear off, Bugsy's weight will come back.

I can't remember about steroid injections for any of the dogs. I do remember though one of our dogs having a strong reaction to oral prednisone. I had to take him out just about every two hours...slept on the couch and would set the alarm each time for two hours. He was on it for quite some time. We did finally get him to a lower dosage that didn't bother him quite as bad. So hopefully the thirst problem is just from the injection.

Positive thoughts for the weight loss just being some loss of muscle tone, since it sounds like you've been trying to keep him quiet and he's not getting his normal exercise. Have you maybe feeding him a bit less, since you know he hasn't been exercising as much? How about treats? Has he maybe been getting not as many as usual, since you might not be doing as many treat related activities with all that is going on. A little bit of all of those things can surprisingly make more of a difference i think than we might realize.

Come on Bugsy, healing vibes so your Mom can stop worrying.
