BAD bruising after spay

    BAD bruising after spay

We just had our Chihuahua mix puppy 6 months old spayed on Friday. She seems okay she is eating and drinking. However she is bruising BAD. Friday she had one pretty small like nickel size, Saturday she had 2 the nickel size one was now quarter size and the 2nd that appeared was a little bigger then a quarter. I called my vet (not the place that spayed her, the animal control we got her from paid for it through a vet they have a deal through) anyway my vet said the bruising shouldn't get worse which I told her it was but she seemed to think she should be fine to wait and see how she is Monday. Well today the bruising it HUGE like covering her stomach probably 4 inches long by 2-3 inches wide. I am FREAKING of course and she will be at the vet first thing tomorrow. Anyone ever hear of anything like this what could it be. Also there is a hard lump there as well however the lump is going down. Over the phone my vet said the lump could be her having a reaction to the stitches and that they dont do anything for that she would be okay they would be put her on antibodtics as a caution. Well the lump is getting better its the fact that her stomach is now covered in this DARK black bruise I guess I am worried she is bleeding internal or something her stool is okay urine okay and I have checked her gums which I am sure I am freaking myself out over they are pink maybe not as pink as normal but there is color to them even though I am FREAKING.

Check that the stitches are in place.

She is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally, so not to worry.

There is an older thread with photos discussing this as well, see it here:

Thank you I think the stitches look okay there is nothing coming out of them no drainage or anything. I looked at the photos from the other thread and all I can say is my dogs are way way worse they are basically black its so badly bruised and at least 3x the size from the other thread and still growing :(. it makes me happy that this dog's vet said that dog was okay though. But yes eating drinking peeing pooping okay which is why I am trying not to panic but its not easy.

First to let you know my qualifications in responding... I'm a retired RN, we have been in our breed of dogs for over 30 years. We do Breed but very rarely, for Show and Companions , producing amazing AKC Conformation Champions, Performance Event Champions, and Amazing Therapy Dogs. We train and teach.

Now to your Important question. After surgery Bruising , yes, even Bad Bruising is to be expected. I would actually be far more worried if the puppy did not bruise after having surgery. It can take from 1 day to 3 or 4, for the full amount of bruising to show up. When it does take a few days by the time the last of the bruising appears , the initial bruises are already starting to turn yellow and green.  In order to spay they must use clamps to hold the bitch's abdominal and uterine area opened and exposed or available to work on.  Even the fastest and most careful vets will have a good bit of bruising on tiny dogs. It is often shocking to their owners who are expecting at tiny incision and at worst a minor amount of color post spay. Our breed is pretty big. The small girls are around 60 pounds. And since our breed has very short hair when there is any kind of surgery we will see a pretty substantial amount of bruising. So, honestly , you are not alone in how shocking it can feel when you see the many colors of a post surgical belly! :0)

You mentioned her gums being pink and of course that is good, however knowing what you are actually looking for helps, (IF you already know forgive me, but if any one else reads this and doesn't then we both did a good thing by covering the info). Post surgery, ( or, after any trauma from an accident to a dog fight,  you  want to check  for possible shock. It's really easy. Holding your dog tucked under one arm, you'll pull her head upwards, against your chest then open her mouth. Once open, slide your thumb inside and press firmly on the gum for about 10 seconds.  Remove your thumb, but keep the dog's mouth open and the lips drawn back to allow you a clear and easy view of the area you just put pressure on. A Healthy dog's gums will rebound from that pressure from the pale , ghostly white right after you'd put the pressure on them , to a lovely baby pink. You might want to do this 1-3 times, on different parts of her gums. The upper gums are most easy to work with, but top or bottom, sides or front,  you want the same response. From that grey ghostly white..... to pink again, in a matter of seconds. If your dog's gums ever do NOT respond in the desired manner, pause... breathe....  give it a few minutes and  then, check again. If , on the recheck, they stay white or grey.... you need to call your vet, or take pup to the ER vet.  White and Grey gums post pressure check are serious. It's a strong indicator that dog is in shock and needs to have a vet checking on why?

She is lucky to have a Dog Mom who is smart enough to ask questions when worried. ANY time you have concerns , please feel free to give a shout out to the list, or to any of us personally.  There is a ton of intelligence available on this and other  Dogs Lists.

The very Best of Luck to you and your Girl! Hopefully we will all get to see photos of her soon.  We have a new girl at our home, she is just over 4 months old.  However oour Puppy , Karma weighs nearly 40 pounds!  Her Momma, Dreamer, weighs in about 76 pounds and Daddy, Zion is pushing 90 pounds with a big smile on his face.  There are photos of them and the rest of our pack on our website. bwanakennel.com . Our website is not a puppy pushing site. While we do breed once in a blue moon, we have the site up for breed information and to answer as many questions as we can.

Thank you yes her gums are pink the biggest reason I know what to look for is 6 months ago I lost my beloved fur baby to IMHA her gums were hardly ever pink so sadly enough because she died of such a horrid thing my other babies get there gums checked weekly LOL. The bruising is just plain AWFUL I will try to post a picture but for some reason I can never figure out how to I cant even get a picture as my profile on there I just cant figure it out. Thank you for explaining because yes when someone needs answer they need the whole story :).

Okay going to try and post pictures the first pic will be on Friday when we brought her home the day of the surgery the 2nd will be from today if I can figure this out.

Its a different angle in the 2nd picture and you cant see all of the bruising maybe half of it she wasnt to happy I was taking her picture right now. But this covers her whole tummy :( and keeps doubling on a daily basis

NATASHA ---- BREATHE!!!!!!  No freaking -- this is a normal, but small dog.  IMHA rules are good to remember, but stress thou NOT!!!

(Folks, Tasha is an old friend from the IMHA thread).  See once you've had a dog with IMHA you just plain DON'T want any trouble with anything.  Not for *any* reason, right Natasha??

Everything Bonita says is gold -- however -- get to the vet and have her seen.  Did they do pre-op bloodwork?  If not, then just as soon as you guys can afford it, do a blood panel (a full one) so you know what the liver and kidney values are, and what her 'baseline' is.  It will give you some confidence.

Now-- to put those pics from your profile in a post -- click on the pic in your profile and at the bottom there's a tab that says "sizes".  Find which 'size' you want to post and display it on your screen -- go to the top and copy the URL where the pic is.  THEN in a post (like in the white space where you type) look at the menu bar at the top and look for a little green "tree" (two left from the happy face).  Click there and a window comes up where you can put in the url of the picture you chose.  It will display in your post that way.

Natasha -- I"m glad to see you back.  We do need to see happy pictures!!!  Hugs to you and yours.  I was just thinking of you the other day!!

Oh how I have missed you :) Yes she went to the vet I just love my vet they totally checked her out free of charge cause I am a little crazy. They said her incision looked fine. It was a lot of bruising more then the normal dog but they werent concerned and said she should be fine it will probably just take her longer to heal then most. And yes Callie I dont want trouble with anything I have had way to much trouble LOL I even checked her gums yesterday like a FRUIT CAKE. I feel better knowing my own vet office has seen her.

Okay I will try this picture thing again :) How do i make a picture my profile picture though so I dont have a red box anymore???

I would assume that just like people...some dogs mark or bruise a lot easier than others. It takes a HELLUVA' shot to mark me...but my hubs or son hits their arm on a doorway and WHAM bruise that looks like they went ten rounds with Mike Tyson. I have never figured out why other than they are fair skinned and I am brown...lol!

:) How do i make a picture my profile picture though so I dont have a red box anymore???

At the top click on "Edit Profile" -- then on the right click "Profile Settings" -- then at the top click the "Avatar" tab and either add one that you've added to your photos or put in the URL of another picture.

    Take care!
