    Lili's puppies (due mid-March)

Finnish Lapphund Lili (reg. Fidelis Villatar, dob 4/20/07) arrived today and as her "owner" (I've placed her under breeder's terms) had already suspected she is indeed expecting. I've updated my homepage, but as that is only in Finnish here's a brief description of the sire, Viksu (reg. Shacal Ukkometso) and the dam Lili.

Viksu, Shacal Ukkometso, will be three years old in May. Viksu has healthy hips (FCI A), knees and eyes. He has a res-CC from shows and has participated in multiple unofficial obedience trials (including a fourth place finish the day after Viksu and Lili were mated). Viksu (whose pet name one could translate as smart) is a rather well behaved youngster, who is also rather eager to please his owner. He is a mentally stable dog as evidenced by his result from the Finnish character test. Viksu is also secure to shots.

Lili, Fidelis Villatar, will be four years in April. Lili has healthy hips (FCI B), elbows (FCI 0/0), knees and eyes. She has a good from a show. Lili is a well behaved little (literally) girl, who lives as family dog with two Saint Bernards and an Irish Wolfhound. Lili has also done nicely in the Finnish character test and is secure to shots as well.

This will be the first litter for both of the dogs. Viksu is prcd-PRA free and Lili is a carrier, so none of the puppies will be affected by this form of progressive retinal athropy. 8-generation inbreeding coefficient of the litter is 0,67% and ancestor loss coefficient is 0,64 (0,98 at six generations). The litter has been approved by the breed club.

The dogs were mated on Jan 8th and despite the size difference and both dogs being first timers everything went as well as one can hope for.

Sounds like a nice pairing!!  Lots of considerations made.  What do you do with your dogs?  Sounds like you show, what else do you do with your dogs?

     Welcome to the forum! :)

I don't show that much. In fact Lili has only been to a single show in her life as she is half an inch below the standards recommendation and even if the standard does state that type is more important than size she'll never be particularly succesful in the show ring due to her small stature. Other than that she is a pretty fine looking specimen even if that is not something I really thrive for in my breeding. Physical and mental health are my main goals when it comes to dog breeding and I'll be thrilled if the dogs I breed turn out to be great companions and possible end up in obedience rings as well. I do consider healthy conformation as a part of physical health, but I don't really worry about, for example, ear size or coat lenght when planning a mating. I am a proud member of this finnish society: The Society for Canine Genetic Health and Ethics Other members include quite a few people from the same field of study I am in (ie. animal breeding).

As far as the two dogs I have at home are conserned their first purpose is to be good pets for me. The other does some agility and blood tracking and the other competes in obedience and hopefully one day in working trials (search for her) as well.

    Ditto!

My "living room" is now set up with the puppy box and Lili has slept there a few nights. The puppies could be born now, but my original guess (after the mating) was 3/10. We'll see.

Lili is now in stage 1 on parturition. She has been panting for a few hours and her nesting behaviour is getting more frequent. There's a bit less than five hours left until midnight, so I'm hopeful that my original prediction on the whelping date will be correct. Not that it really matters, mind you.

Did you have a progesterone test, too?

Very exciting!! I hope things go very smoothly for Lili and you have a happy, healthy litter on the ground soon!  Photos will be needed :)

No. In fact I've never used one. I know it would work, but so far knowing my bitches and trusting the studs has given the results I've wanted. (Excluding the time the stud had been chemically castrated and hadn't recovered in the expected time.)

I've also used ultrasound only once. I think you can tell by just looking at the bitches early enough, that they are indeed expecting. If I were uncertain, I might go for one at a rather late stage (compared to those who just want to know asap) of the pregnancy. I've not had x-rays taken either. Never had a reason to suspect a single puppy, so I've not been too worried about knowing the exact number before hand (not that they could always give you one either).

Up to three puppies by now. One girl, one boy and one of whom I've not yet checked. He/she is suckling allright, but the umbilical cord was still attached so I let them be. And now number four was apparently born. I'll be back :)

edit: I've weighed two of the puppies so far. Both were about 13,2oz which is typical of the breed.

Thanks. And so far so good. Currently there are five puppies, two boys and three girls. Looks like there will be at least one more. Lili's dam has two litters, both had seven puppies.
