Things are not going well for Wolfgang

Dogs of his age don't get seizures.

Absolutely NOT NOT NOT true.  You can develop seizures at any age and for a myriad of reasons.   Chemicals can easily cause seizures and they're inventing more by the microsecond.  My Kee didn't develop full blown seizures til she was about 16.  I've had human friends who developed them as children and as adults.

Going to Davis is a superb idea -- they're a great vet school.  I always tell people to go to a vet school over a "specialty" vet clinic.  Vet schools tend to be far more cutting edge -- and they are **teaching** how to diagnose, and how to use procedures and diagnosis to follow the path to healing.

    good luck

Glad he's doing better. Good luck at UC Davis.

Sending positive thoughts from New England. Being able to lower the pheno dose seems to have had some positive effects--yeah! Extra belly rubs for Wolfgang and hugs to you.

I've had very bad experiences with "corporate"  vets, and good , but somewhat time consuming and annoying with UC Davis,  so that's where Wolfgang will go. I trust them for integrity as well as being "cutting edge". Unfortunately, his appointment isn't until 1/3, but if necessary, I can do emergency before. Wolfgang's hu-dad is working out of town now so that date will work for him too, as he'll have to miss a day of work.

He did have another seizure after dropping to 60 mgs., but I've noticed they always happen after meals so I'm putting him on three meals per day. That ups the risk of a seizure when I'm not home but it may be less severe. I would notice if he had one. Wolfie loses his salivary glands and gets sticky. Also in the case of three of the four seizures, he'd been somewhat active after the meal, so no activity at all for two hours after meals.

Honestly, at this point, I've already spent a lot of money and need to either conserve or do credit. Remember that construction is our living. I think it's time to see what Davis has to say about him, rather than trying a different holistic vet.   I can sort of afford one or the other. By February, I can afford both, if necessary, but I'm kind of thinking Davis first.

Makes sense to me; I think you have a better chance of finding out what's wrong at Davis.

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck at UC Davis. Nothing to add, really, except to keep a journal if you aren't already. Even a simple word document that you could print out before you go. I'm sure you're already doing grain-free and avoiding triggers the best you can. Pirate's done the best on The Honest Kitchen's Preference pre-mix and an added meat source. I know turkey and whitefish are OK for him, so that's what we stick with. Have you tried any calming herbs? I'd check with his vets but passionflower extract works great for Pirate, valerian makes him worse. Again, the journal in all of this has been key.

Check out the 'Canine Epilepsy Guardian Angels' site if you haven't already. Their liver cleansing diet might buy you some time. If you aren't giving milk thistle with the pheno DO IT - send me a quick email and I'll pop a pound in the mail to you. I have lots of extra right now.

Feel free to PM or email me.

Thank you all so much for all of the good wishes. Wolfgang worsened during the week, so we took him to emergency at UCD and met with a neuroligist. She gave him a very poor prognosis, so we took him home and euthaniized him with his regular vet that afternoon. He had several pounds of steak, cheese, and bratwurst as well as nine chocolate chip cookies.

It was the last thing we could do. Wolfgang was only nine years old.

     He was one hellva dog.

If there's a heaven, Wolfgang wiill be with hu-granny. I fought with that woman to keep him normal weiight and she snuck cookies eveyr step of the way. She always said he was too skinney.

I know in my heart that we did a great job with Wolfgang. He had a home worthy of such a great dog.Wolfie was the best peacekeeper I've ever met between dogs. He absolutely never allowed a fight to happen. Sometimes he'd place himself in the middle, or sometimes, he'd draw his own dog to the side, but he absolutely prevented fights. When we first got Floyd, he was a very undersocialied Malinois. Floyd was playing at the school when the very undersocialized Boxer came and boxed him. Floyd snapped and went back for his ball. The Boxer boxed him again and Floyd bit him in the jowl. About the time the Boxer was going to really bite Floyd in ernest here came Wolfgang from across the field. He nipped Floyd in the flank and led him on a long play chase, which prevented a fight. It was a very fine show of Wolfgang's talents.

Wolfgang lived a short life, but it was a big little life.

He was also the best theif I've ever met. We used to call him Stealthgang because he was so talented at stealing roasts.

Wolfgang had an utter joy about him. We were stuck in the e-vet's one night and and he made it his mission to cheer everyone in the room. And he did. Then it was his turn to go in for X-Ray's. He was fine and just towing the X-Ray tech down the hall.
