UTI?

    UTI?

I've never had a pet with a UTI but I think my puppy might have one.  The first two days, he peed like every 5 hours or so and it was a stream of pee for at least 5 seconds.  Now, starting this afternoon, it seems like when he's awake he's constantly squatting, and getting either nothing, a few drops (sometimes not even enough to fall, he has that little bit of hair on his penis), or he pees but not near as much/as long.  He already has a vet appointment for tomorrow after work (per the contract).  Is this an emergency or will he be OK until tomorrow evening?  I'm letting him out a lot or just keeping him occupied outside and if he squats in the house he is not being "punished" or anything like that.

He should be fine, til tomorrow. UTIs are no fun, but not usually emergencies.

That's what I thought, just wanted to make sure I'm not harming him.  He sleeps OK and doesn't seem to be in pain. I mean, he's been VERY cranky (whining and screaming) since I got him but Nikon was that way for a few days too, going from having other warm bodies to play and sleep with to being "along", but I would expect that and not blame it on any possible health concerns.

I wasn't aware this was a male complication. Hope the little boy gets a clean bill of health. UTI's are so not fun! I get them at least 3x a year. Sucks is the word that comes to mind. Whoa, I got way OT ,sorry.

Oh yeah -- both males AND females (and little males because face it -- it "drags" in every kind of dirt and bacteria til they learn to not squat too deeply before they get to be big boys ... or in the case of Billy who is 11 and still squats!)

The only time it's a huge emergency is if you see either pink urine or red blops of blood in the urine.

Now with we human females if we strain (because it burns and we constantly feel like we gotta go) we can bruise our kidneys and cause pink urine.  But with a dog "pink urine" is actually the more scarey of the two.  Blops of blood in the urine is not uncommon -- that is VERY critical and needs vet attention a.s.a.p. but morning is fine - just don't ever ever let that go.

However "pink" urine in a dog is scarey because that can most easily be an auto-immune response where the body is killing the blood by getting rid of it in the urine.  It's way up there on par with IMHA and IMT.

UTIs are painful (no wonder he's cranky) but they aren't an emergency vet thing unless you see pink urine ... and if it were me blood in the urine would send me to the vet tonight as well l(except I always keep stuff here for that).

I've had both males and females prone to UTIs.  And ... while you suspect this, watch his water habits.  **encourage** him to drink.  If he can catch on that drinking helps dilute the urine so it doesn't burn so bad it's a darned good habit.  A dog who won't drink b/c it burns has a lot more pain than the one who drinks to dilute the burn.

No blood or dark urine.  He's peed a few times in the house so I can tell Smile  I've been letting him basically drink what he wants, except over night there's not water in the crate.

Side note, he's 8 weeks old today and has lifted his leg twice!

Sorry you have this Lies. Teddi has always been prone to UTI's in fact I am watching her to make sure she doesn't have another. She is a big pee'r always has been so it is hard to tell, also hard to tell if she is squatting and nothing happening.

A couple months back she pee'd and I noticed it was dark in color. Then we got home, she went out, came in dripping what looked like blood. No other signs before this. Took her to the vet, her bladder was FULL of blood clots. I felt horrible, but there were no outward signs. Having a little boy hopefully he will just have the one round.

I really need to get Teddi on a cranberry supplement, and probably some yogurt wouldn't hurt either.

I like d-mannose way better than cranberry.  It's super easy to give (it looks and tastes just like confectioner's sugar -- it is magnesium in the form of a sugar, in fact).  Any health store that carries "NOW" Brand stuff can get it for you -- just get the powder (it's far cheaper than the capsules) and it lasts a long time.  About 1/4 teas. works for most dogs.

Thanks Callie, I will check. So somewhere like GNC should have it?

Call them BEFORE you run your legs off -- I never shop GNC so I don't know.  I *don't* like the Solaray version that combines cranberry and d-mannose.  It was UBER pricey and just wasn't combined right at all.

You can get d-mannose online -- just whatever brand you pick get the "powder" rather than capsules.  It's 4 times the price and the dog's body has to process the gell cap needlessly.  Trust me - no dog on the planet is going to not like this -- it's pure sugar.

And fyi -- the body doesn't 'absorb' this stuff -- that's why cranberry and d-mannose work.  The glucose in them isn't absorbed by the body -- it pipes straight out the urinary tract and bonds to bacteria/infection cells instead and makes them too "slippery" to attach to the urinary tract walls.

NOW Brand Foods is online and they have a locator.  but I've found it's simply easier to call the store before I go and make sure they have it in stock.  *rolling eyes* my little mom & pop health store sometimes gets out of the powder and I've had to pay the steeper price for the capsules (which does NOT make Aunt Callie happy!! *crossed eyes*).

It's a very popular item in areas where people know what it's for.  And for those of us ladies who have a problem with recurring UTIs it is awesome stuff.  And heck -- you can put it in your coffee, tea or whatever too.

Billy has always been KING of the UTI's -- it was a mega side effect when he was treated for IMHA (and has remained a lingering problem).  And at one time the vet and I decided to switch back to cranberry instead of the d-mannose just for a "change" (and cranberry IS cheaper).

But I got myself in trouble -- I homecook and I've always tended to be generous with the calcium.*sigh* and it takes quite a bit of cranberry to "work" for Billy -- and he wound up with major crystals problems last spring because of it -- so the vet and I learned our lesson and Billy's staying on the d-mannose and  I'll use up the cranberry on ME.  LOL

I love the convenience of iherb. I have been ordering from them for a few years. Their prices are great and I love the Now brand. I use their true food vegan, and other supplements. Although I have never experienced a UTI in any of my dogs I will keep info for future use. Thanks

    Sorry for hijacking Lies.

Callie - This is very interesting to me because I home cook too and asked the question recently about calcium from the chicken bones that cook down in their food. Layla has yet another UTI and I'm wondering if I need to remove some of the bones when I make their food. I haven't been able to have testing done for stones, mainly for financial reasons, but it is a top priority now. I'm really concerned about it.

I give cranberry every day. What is the best way to administer the D-mannose?? I guess I could mix it in with their yogurt??

    • Gold Top Dog

You can put the d-mannose right in the food - it's easy.  1/4 tsp twice a day is fine --

Are you supplementing other calcium?  I don't give chicken regularly and I DO give Natural Essentials Calcium (a sea calcium supplement) and I use 1 teas. per 16 oz of meat.  it depends on what calcium you use.  But I prefer to measure the calcium rather than just guessing to be honest.
