Swelled paw (Tessy)

    Swelled paw (Tessy)

I mentioned earlier today in the MC thread that Tessy was starting to limp.  Well, I just noticed that her paw is now swelled some.  Her back right.  I'm not sure if this is from her recent chemotherapy she had yesterday (doxorubicin) or not.  I can't see anything else wrong with her paw.

I was going to give her a benedryl but was wondering dosages or if anyone else had any advise.

    Thanks

    Johnny,

Did they administer the chemo via IV? If so, was it in or near the area that's swollen?

The chemo was done by IV but it was administered into the front left leg.  It doesn't seem to cause her pain (at least not much I don't think).  She'll let me touch and massage her foot some.  The swelling seems to be more on the bottom of the foot but above the black toe area...not really where she walks on.

Definitely Benedryl to start -- the dose is 1-2 mg/lb body weight.  The liquid is generally 12.5 mg/teas. and the OTC capsules are 25 mg.  But check the label - it may be different there.

Massage gently -- and watch it carefully.  With all Tessy's been thru blood clots are always a concern.  Got any epsom salts??  a warm soak -- even a small plastic container of warm water or warm compresses (which might be easier).  If she objects strongly to 'warm' try COLD.  (she'll tell you if she doesn't like it)

Thanks guys.  I got no epsom salt but I was wondering about warm presses.  I gave her 25mg benedryl about 1/2 hr ago so will give her another in another hr or so.

This is the same leg that had the lymph node removed just over a month ago.

I hope the benadryl and warm compress helps. I know with humans, you can get lympedema when lymph nodes are removed and it can be quite tender. I hope Tessy is feeling better soon.

The swelling hasn't gone down any...actually it's a little more swelled and now she's chewing at it.  I've got to wrap it or something cause now the top par is swelled some and oozing out redish stuff...not blood though.  It doesn't overly bother her when she walks on it or when I touch or rub it but if I apply pressure she'll pull away.  Not sure what to think.  She's doing an awefull lot of licking these past couple hrs.

I'm gonna have to take her in tomorrow if it continues to swell.  I was thinking of starting her on antibiotics in the meantime but figured I'd wait till tomorrow.  I don't know...maybe I'll give her some tonight.  Damnit...if it isn't one thing it's another right!

Isn't there an on/off button for the brain???

Johnny, I hope the swelling is better by tomorrow.

That's exactly what Jessie's paw did several years ago. Her paw swelled, and then the swelling traveled up her leg. While we were on our way to the e-vet, a reddish fluid started draining from a slit on the top of her paw. It was from a water snake bite, and the vet injected both of her legs with steroids and also prescribed oral steroids. Is there a slit or opening on the top of Tessie's paw? I'll be sending healing vibes;(((hugs)))

The night before last (Sunday) I went ahead and started Tessy on antibiotics.  Ive got several on hand for emergency or just in case needs.  I had a feeling it was an abscess and the doctor confirmed it for me.  She's on antibiotics now for at least a couple weeks and has to get her foot wrapped and cleaned twice daily....she hates this!!!  For the first time EVER Tessy actually bit at the doctor.  The doctor was feeling the foot and it must've been so sore she turned and tried to nip her!  Poor little girl.  She's loving the extra food though she gets with the meds!

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers guys.

There is a pain threshold that will make even the most saintly ones snap.  I'm glad she's on antibiotix.  Glad it's under control.

Poor poor Tessy :( When Pirate had to get his foot iced, I gave him a bully stick to chew while I held the ice pack on. An edible distraction might help while you change the wrap.

I hope Tessy's foot is better soon.  Give her some gentle belly rubs from me.  Meg's got a good idea on a food distraction while her bandage is being changed.
