Luger is sick.

    Luger is sick.

Last night when I got up to let him out(I set the alarm for night time potty) he had an awful case of the diarrhea. Then this morning he wouldnt eat his breakfast and then puked 3 times while outside for morning potty.

It's sunday. The vet is closed.Sad I can wait till tomorrow but if this is parvo by any chance I want to get the treatment started now! He is still active and wanting to play but I am so worried.

And he did go to the vet to check for a UTI but he didnt have one. Just needed some adjusting to potty time. So he isnt on any medicines or anything to make him sick.

What should I do? Call the vet for an emergency? Or wait it out till tomorrow?

At his age, if it were me...I'd probably make an e-vet visit especially if he is not eating or drinking.  Can you CALL the emergency vet and ask questions and get advice.  Give some back ground; and the vet MAY help you decide if it can wait until tomorrow.    Encourage liquids.  Keep us posted.

Oh he's drinking. Just not eating. But I will call the vet. Thanks!

He's holding water down? If he is, I'd probably wait. A puppy his size will be ok, for 24 hours, without food. Without water, not so fine.

What's he throwing up? Food? Bile? ANY chance he could have gotten into something poisionous? If he's still playing, happy, and drinking liquids, I might try to wait it out until Monday morning. Pinch the skin at the back of his neck, where it's loose - if he's adequately hydrated it'll snap right back into place. Most of all, GO WITH YOUR GUT. Mommies know. Even dog moms :)

In my experiences with parvovirus, you would know it's parvovirus. It's a very distinct smell - but the dogs I've met were at the very end so I could be wrong.

I caught Em's parvo at the very beginning. It smelled like rancid blood (if that even makes sense) and she couldn't hold down water, or honey placed on her tongue. Took her to the vet, the next morning, and she was a mild positive. She stayed in the hospital for three days. Parvo is very, very scary, and a very serious threat to young babies.

What smelled exactly?  The poop or pee?  The vomit?  The body?  I've never dealt with Parvo, so I genuinely don't know.

Her breath and everything that came out of her. As it progressed, her body smelled, too, and even after she was washed, it smelled. It is FOUL.

I'm with Jennie - the puppies I was with, the entire room smelled like it.

Ok well he don't smell. His diarrhea is watery now. It was poopey diarrhea at first. He hasn't thrown up anymore.

I don't think he ate anything besides his kibble and some of my peanut butter sandwich yesterday. Just peanut butter no jelly! And only the last bite.

Should I try to get him to eat something? Or just make sure he continues to drink? I've never dealt with Parvo either but the internet scared me when I typed in "diarrhea and throwing up in a puppy."

Definately encourage drinking....what you don't want...is for him to get dehydrated.

Drink drink drink. If he's not drinking you can bribe him with ice cubes to crunch on, or mix a tiny (TINY) bit of low-salt broth with some water.

Like I said, go with your gut ;) If you feel like he's getting worse, take him in.

And, because I forgot to say it the first time, feel better Luger!

If he feels dehydrated (tacky gums, skin that doesn't bounce back), you can give unflavored pedialyte. My dogs always loved it. With diarrhea in a puppy, it isn't a bad idea, anyways...

If you do offer food, offer only a very small amount.

    How is Luger this morning?

    • Gold Top Dog

He's good. Did the apple cider vinegar for a week and he is accident free. No peeing in the house or crate. Is drinking normally again.

Vet checked him out and said he was ok. No parvo either. Must have been a bug he had? Scared me to death!
