Boston Terrier looks pink

    Boston Terrier looks pink

Last week my 1 year old BT was diagnosed with coccidia. We took her to the vet and she was started on 2 different pills last Thursday. Well, yesterday she turned pink around her snoot, eye, and belly (areas that she is white). It does not seem to bother her (she isn't itching or anything). We have not changed her food or anything and her temperment has not changed at all either. We called the vet to see if it is a reaction to the pills or if it is something else. The vet isn't too concerned, but would like to see her. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else??

Probably not a direct reaction to the pills, but it IS probably some sort of allergic reaction - possibly a staph infection. You're best off taking him back into the vet

It doesn't look like a staph infection...it looks kinda like a little kid does when they have red koolaid around their lips. It's the best way I can describe it.

She typically gets pink when she is tired and/or worked up, but she is like this all the time right now.

    Thank you!!! :-)

hmm... sounds like her body is not agreeing with the meds she's on - I'm assuming albon? what's the other on?

    • Gold Top Dog

The side effects of both drugs...given it's trimethoprim sulfa and sulfa dimethoxine...can be skin rashes and irritations.  They call these side effects idiosynchratic meaning it has nothing to do with the amounts used but the animals sensitivity to it (the drugs).  Might be worth having it checked out though.  The drugs used to treat this are also related to kidney and bladder issues...stones and crystals...so perhaps you can heep an eye out for this also.

Good luck....hopefully Dr. Callie might know a little more about this.

I know that she is on Albon for sure. I can't remember the other one right now. We gave her the pills last night thinking that she was just tired, but when she was still pink this morning we did not give her any of them. She is going to see the vet this afternoon, so hopefully we will figure it out.

Thanks for all your help. Big Smile

I'm wondering how they would treat the coccidia without the Albon? It seems like the only treatment I am finding is the Albon.

    • Gold Top Dog

Since coccidia is so closely related to giardia perhaps if the Albon isn't suitable you could ask to use metronidazole.  Another drug commonly used is ponazuil...for larger animals (horses) but is said to work very effectively...BUT it is sort of a waste of money and harder to do cause it's a paste that has to be diluted and since for a single dog you wouldn't even use part of the tube...thus a waste....but an option none the less.  Out of hte sulfa drugs that can be used hte Albon is the preferred with the less side effects and greater effectiveness.  Maybe ask the docs for a different Sulfa based drug?  You could also ask about the injectable form of Albon.  Might be better for the dog?

You should also clean up REALLY WELL after the dog.  Frequent bathing with a good shampoo might help also.

Sulfa-tri is just not a good drug -- anymore it is very often seen as a trigger for auto-immune stuff like IMHA.  I would ask for a different drug.

However -- is she licking the belly area?  What you are describing actually sounds like a contact allergy -- it could be a reaction to the drug, but could the dog have gotten into anything new -- like poison oak or did you go swimming somewhere or was the dog outside in a little bit different area.

I'm in Florida and there are a TON of plant life that can produce exactly that sort of reaction (a contact allergy is exactly what we experience when we get into poison ivy -- *that* is a contact allergen, but dogs actually have a bunch of them that can cause tiny wet blisters, pink/sore/itchy skin and the red rimmed lips.

I would *definitely* have the vet check it.

We went to the vet yesterday and she doesn't think it is the medication. She said that we probably would have seen a reaction sooner than we did. We did explain that it appeared the redness went down when we didn't give her the meds yesterday. The vet decided to keep her on the Albon and Flagyl, since she only has a couple of days left, and to also give her some benadryl to see if it helps. She was hesitant to take her off the Albon and Flagyl at this point since the reaction isn't very serious. If she doesn't get better in the next couple of days we need to call her back.

Just to answer your questions....it is really weird because she isn't scratching or rubbing where we see the red. She is brown and white and we are seeing where she is white. I did some looking and one of the side effects of Flagyl is redness under the skin, which kinda sounds like what she has. She is eating fine, her temperment is fine, the issues we had from the coccidia are gone, so we may just have to wait it out until she is through with the meds.

I'm wondering........Gibson my Dane has one eye that has no  dark color around it.....his fur is white all around. He had a pink nose with one little black spot as a baby, but now that he is getting older the black and has grown and his nose is mostly black now...but his fur on his whole snout is white.....showing a lot of pink under especially on the bridge.      When gibby is stressed and excited and tired....all of this gets much pinker. Are you sure its not just from not feeling that swell rather than a reaction to the medicine?

We originally thought that....when she gets worked up now she gets even redder and then it goes to pink when she calms down. The vet saw this too, she got all worked up playing with the vet and when she decided she wanted to lay in the vets lap she turned pink.

    • Gold Top Dog

I can tell you that sometimes Gibby gets soooooo pink or red...that it looks just awful....he looks sick sometimes when its so dark...a feature that I did not know about when I got him.  First day home a lady was here to see him and said "Dyan...are you sure he is alright...look at his eye!"  And it did take some getting used to.  Any stress or excitment makes it much worse.

Normally she is white, when she is playing or gets tired then she turns pink. Right now when she gets tired or worked up she's red. This is something more than her being worked up.
