My puppy is missing a rib

I was petting my sisters puppy and I noticed he is missing a rib. I know he is missing a rib because part of it is there, there is only about 1 inch of a rib there, Is this something she should be concerned about and go to the vet to get checked out for?

The bottom rib is shorter (on both humans and dogs.but if it is worrisome the  right answer is always to go have a vet look at it -- particularly if it is at all possible that the rib was broken somehow (which could have occurred).

It's pretty impossible for someone on a messageboard to know what *you* are feeling, but honestly if you're concerned enough to post about it I'd ask to have a vet look at it.

For peace of mind, I would have it checked.

It is probably a "floating rib."  It is normal.  Dog's last rib on each side is not attached to the sternum by cartilage as are the other ribs.  Some dogs last rib is more prominent than others, therefore easier to detect.
