Groomer questions

    Groomer questions

I've decided to take Angel to a groomer instead of trying to clip her myself, for now.  I have used a groomer in the past to bathe my guys, when I didn't have time, but short of that, I've not really used a groomer so I'm not exactly sure how everything works.  I figured that I'd ask my questions here before I made an appointment.

    • Should I bathe her before I take her in?
    • Is it traditional to just drop her off & pick her up later, or is waiting expected?
    • Am I going to offend the groomer by asking for a specific type of trim?  I know how I want her cut but I don't know if it's acceptable to ask for this or is it more of a "one size fit all" kinda cut that she will get.
    • Will I offend the groomer if I ask them not to trim her nails?  (She hates having her feet handled & we're making huge steps to desensitize her.  I really don't want any setbacks.)

Anyway, those are my big questions.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Nope. It won't offend the groomer AT ALL. In fact, the more specific customers are, the better I like it. Tell the groomer why you don't want her nails trimmed, and whether you want her feet trimmed or not.

You typically drop of a dirty dog, and come back 3-5 hours later to a clean, beautiful dog.

    Thanks Jennie!

I don't think a groomer would be offended, seems like they appreciate specifics so that the owner doesn't freak out b/c they hate the trim.  When I have Coke groomed, I drop him off at 7:30 and pick him up at 5:00.  They bathe and brush him, trim him how I say.

I mean, even if you bring pictures, draw diagrams.... I'm more likely to hug you than flip you off, LOL! I hear so much "Puppy cut" "Poodle cut" "make him look like x breed" it makes me wanna die.

I assure you that I won't ask for either of those cuts....I have no clue what they are!

What I want is pretty simple.  I want her hair cut down to about 3/4" & I need the hair around her eyes trimmed so that she can see out of it.  I *think* that's pretty simple.  I've decided that if it doesn't look great on her, we'll try something else next time!

    • Gold Top Dog

     Neither do I!

That is plenty simple enough. I would then ask you how you'd like her ears, tail, feets, and top of her head. Usually, people want all of that just neatened, but sometimes people want feet shaved or even ears shaved.

    • Gold Top Dog

I hadn't thought about any of that!

Her feet are already shaved, which is pretty nice.  I think that everything else just needs to be neatened up a bit.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yup. Clean feet are very nice. They'll probably offer to redo that, if it's not fresh. They'll also need to know if she or any of the family has any sensitivities to fragrence, or if she has touchy skin.

    • Gold Top Dog

WOW!  All of this is stuff that I would have never thought about.  "Foo Foo" dogs are a lot of work!

You better hope she doesn't come home with bows, LOL. Your crew would probably die laughing at her!

I don't think so. I've never bathed Pat or Mo before bringing them to the groomer's where they'll be bathed (again).

I think it's easier to drop them off and pick them up. My dogs usually take a long time (4-6 hours) so I'm not going to sit around, waiting in the tiny grooming shop for them to be done.

I agree with Jennie- the more specific the better. Our groomer *always* talks to us before we drop the dogs off about what we want/don't want. The groomer should not be offended if you don't want your dogs nailed trimmed. They should be very understanding. Our groomer also recommended that our dogs go pee and poop before we drop them off and that they be somewhat exercised.

Post pics when she's done up all pretty!

Chyna & Brinxx would laugh at her.  Schatzi & Bevo would be jealous.  Brutus, in typical male fashion, wouldn't notice, & Shooter would eat the bows. Confused

I think she needs bows! Of course, I think everybody needs bows, and short haired dogs need stick on tattoos.

Foo foo dogs *are* a lot of work, LOL. It's a whole different world. Of course, you'll be prepared, and you'll probably get what you want. That's better than we can say for most folks that bring in a dog.
