My Dog Is Sick. Please Help

About a week ago my roomate called me at work to tell me that my 5 year old boxer was shaking his head uncontrollably for about 10 minutes. After that it stopped and everything seemed good (at least while we were around him). Tonight, for about the past 2 hours, he has been having fits of anxiety for about 15 to 30 seconds each time. One minute he'll be lying around just fine and the next he'll jump up and run around in circles for abour half a minute. This has happened about 4 or 5 times in the past 2 hours. I have every intention of bringing him to the vet today. Just thought i'd try here to see if anyone has experienced anything like this with their dog and might have an explanation for what it could be. Any help would be appreciated

    PS

I have checked his ears and it's not ear mites

I have no idea what could be wrong, I've never experienced anything similar with any of my dogs.  I hope the Vet visit brings some answers.  Maybe someone else will have some ideas.  Please let us know what the Vet has to say and good luck.

That sounds like seizure like activity to me -- but **Please** don't just tell the vet to "make it stop".  Don't let the vet slap him on something like phenabarbitol which is SO addictive (and which has severe side effects long term).  I'm racing to work, but I will try to check back later.  There are other methods of diagnosing and treating such stuff without the risk.

The anxiety and running around is very odd.  It has only been happening in the past 2 hrs? He might simply be uncomfortable or painful and is trying to alleviate it.

with regards to the head shaking:

Boxers are one of the breeds that have been known to have idiopathic displays of head shaking, sort of like teeth chattering in Dobermans. Bulldogs and a few other breeds have it too sometimes. The dogs just have little "fits" of fly biting, teeth chattering, or jaw trembling that go on anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes and then they are fine.

People have seen this in certain breeds for many, many years and there are NO associated brain abnormalities we can detect, that is, they are NOT seizure related. No one knows why they do it. Some suspect it is a variation of obsessive compulsive disorder with a breed specific flair  since no physical or medical abnormalities are found in the dogs.

However in order to rule out seizure, they'll need to look at brain waves and other things.

I have no idea what it could be, but i hope it's nothing serious!

But whatever callie is going to tell you later (and she will, for sure) take her advice to heart. she has so much experience with these things!

Have no advise for you but just wanted to send positive vibes your way.  Have you found anything out yet?

    Hope all is well.

Thank you for the advice and concern so far everyone. He is still showing abnormal behavior for himself at this point (heavy breathing, anxiety). His vet appointment is in a little over an hour so hopefully i'll have some answers pretty soon. I'll keep you guys posted

Simply PAIN can cause that sort of behavior.

But to explain just a bit further -- what I am talking about is what my holistic vet calls "pre-seizurey" behavior.  It's NOT a seizure -- but that sort of obsessive/compulsive sort of behavior is often either a precursor to worse seizure type activity or otherwise.  My peke, Ms. Kee Shu, was a MASS of those behaviors when we took her three years ago -- she wasn't "on this planet" 99% of the day -- you could get her "out" of that state only briefly and then suddenly she was right back into obsession.

We use TCVM (traditional Chinese veterinary medicine) with our dogs and after having her evaluated by both a regular vet and my holistic vet, my holistic vet (Dr. DiNatale -- who is actually considered an expert in the field of seizures/obsessive behavior and who is also on the faculty for the Chi Institute) put Kee on an herb which is similar to pheno, but carries none of the bad side effects.  WOW ... what an incredible difference.  We have seen none of that obsession now for over two years.

Given that this had such a sudden onset, but it has continued for many hours now -- this has to be either pain-related or something similar.  Even when any sort of seizure or obsession takes hold generally the dog will exhaust itself into sleep (even little mini seizures that "cluster" take an enormous physical toll on them).

I hope the vet zeros in on it -- the fact that it has lasted SO LONG with no respite -- that indicates either pain or some sort of toxic reaction.

Just as a thot -- the dog hasn't gotten hold of any chocolate or any sort of medication has it??  Chocolate can have a very similiar effect - we all know chocolate is poison to dogs, but what isn't commonly known is that chocolate, in the dog's liver, becomes a substance VERY like cocaine in their body.  Hence it propels them into incessant, nervous energy and an inability to calm down.

     I don't have any advice; just want to let you know I'll be thinking of your boy and hope the vet can find out what's going on; {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

It sounds like he is in pain....you say he is find and the he will jump up and run in circles.....anxiety and heavy breathing and all.   Sure sounds like a vet visit is in order!

    Hope he is better now!
