    Rabies vaccine--Willow

Hi guys.  I've been doing my own research but I'm not really getting anywhere here.

I've been trying to figure out the best way to deal with this.  Willow's rabies booster is going to expire this month.  And, she's had one bout with immune disease already so will not be re-vaccinated with anything else.  BUT, rabies is required by law in RI and my vet is telling me she needs to get it.

I thought there was some sort of medical waiver but apparently it's not honored in RI??  Is this true, is it different state to state???

I don't want to break the law of course.  But, I'm so scared to do this to her.  I'm afraid of a relapse as it is.  And, this could be a trigger to begin with.

    So, I need some suggestions.

Also, it is Fort Dodge that I should stay away from if I have no choice but to vaccinate her?  Cause if her vet uses Fort Dodge I'll find a vet that doesn't.  I think the last one she had was Merial?? (sp)

    THANKS everyone!!

Yes, it will vary state to state BUT, your vet also has to be willing to go after it for her.

There is also a homeopathic "protocol" (that takes several weeks) to prepare the body for and cope WITH the vaccine.  I also know that TCVM also can do that (in fact, Dr. Chrisman and Dr. Clemmons *I think* have mentioned it to Megan about Pirate -- there was at least talk about it when I was with Megan  and Pi when we went up to Reddick in February.

The first thing that has to be done to get a waiver is that your vet has to do a titer on Willow that **Must** be sent to Kansas State -- it is the ONLY lab in the entire country that does this and they only do it for qualified exceptions (either the dog has to be scheduled to leave the country to go to somewhere rabies vax are not allowed like Hawaii or the UK or the dog has to have a medical reason, like auto-immune disease tendency, that would make it potentially fatal for the vax to be given.

My vet was not at all certain that we could get a waiver on Billy but it wasn't at all difficult but we DO have to do that titer annually.

The other persons I would tell you to contact would be either Kris Christine or Dr. Jean Dodds -- they might be able to give your vet some input on how it might be done and if ANYONE knows RI law and how it may work and if waivers are ever granted it would be Kris (cos she is so involved with each state's laws).

Billy titers astronomically high every year and my bet is that Willow will also.  Honestly, I think it influenced MY vet to see how incredibly high Billy's titer wound up being.  It is SO far above the range required it's not funny.  He did NOT expect that.

Kris's email is embedded in her user ID here and Dr. Dodds' is via Hemopet.com

And just for the record - I will never vaccinate Billy again, even if he never gets to to pet therapy again.  I will just plain not subject him to that.  I might just as well put a gun to his head.

But don't discount the homeopathic therapies and the TCVM therapies.  If you look in the "Lung Problems" (I think that's the title) thread both the TCVM link and the AHVMA links are in there and I described to her how to use the AHVMA crazy "search".  TCVM is easy -- http://www.tcvm.com and if the vets in your area aren't famliar with it, then tell them to talk to Dr. Chrisman at the Chi Institute -- because I *know* it is something they do, but I don't know how effective it is for rabies vax.

Thank you Callie.  This is a really big decision for me.  I feel so stuck.  I don't want to give her the vaccine.  I'm way too scared for her health.

But, on the other hand if our state doesn't honor the waiver I don't know what I'm going to do.  She's not the type of dog that I would take chances with.  If God forbid she ever bit they'd be especially harsh since she's a chow.  Already in this state, one city has banned the chow.

I totally understand. I've been told that there are no exceptions by some vets, and others say you can get a waiver, but if the dog bites, it still has to be quarantined. Emma would not make it through being quarantined, I don't think. Last time, she had a terrible (epileptic) reaction. She's due, in Jan 2011. I'm still undecided on what to do, about that. It's very, very hard, because their health issues and behavior issues call for seperate protocols.

    This is so true!
