    Elbow sores (callouses)

Allie has really bad callouses on her elbows, she's a couch potato, lays around a lot, therefore sore elbows.

Had her to the vet, asked if they could give her a shot for it, instead they gave me a steroid type spray to use

on her,  it's useless.  She licks them at night, slurps and wakes us up.  What do you all use, if your dog has callouses?   thanks,  susan

are they filled with fluid? or just hard and calousy?

if there is no fluid, I would not worry about it - it happens as dogs age, esp. in larger breeds. Just give her plenty of soft, coushiony things to lay on - so she's comfy.

I'm glad the vet didn't give her a steroid shot for *that*.  Steroids are for inflammation -- not callouses.  Steroids are super hard on the liver and kidneys -- and you really don't want to do that for something a topical would be better for.  If it's simply dry, thickened skin, a steroid that's topical again won't do much (because it's not inflammation).

Most any topical that would help (something like Bag Balm, etc.) likely will promote more licking (because dogs LOVE any sort of petrolatum/vaselline-type) of product -- they think it's yummy.

The best suggestion I could give would be to massage in something like Bag Balm every night and then put a long-sleeved t-shirt on the dog at night (sew up the cuffs and then pain with rubber cement to give some traction so the dog doesn't slip and fall) to keep the dog from licking it.

Jewel struggled with elbow callouses too.I viewed hers as more of a symptom of a larger problem. She was overweight and lethargic.I put her on a strict grain-free diet and slowly increased her exercise. Her elbows are much better now, they are no longer pink and she does not lick them.Sprays and creams may provide temporary relief but the problem will likely return if she remains a couch potato.

I just spoke to Willow's Dr. yesterday about how there is one area on her that she's licking--it's not a callous--but anyway, she suggested Bitter Apple to prevent the licking.
