    senior with loose stool

I have visited but haven't posted in a long while. Things were going very well with my furkids until just recently. Caity can not seem to get over loose stools. They are very soft...not soup, but really soft. She almost always makes it out the door...sometimes not. And I have to clean off the patio because they leave marks. She is also being very finicky about eating. She is on her third round of something the vet prescribed that is like Flagyl..third round in the past, oh, 4 months I guess. Today she didn't make it out and I didn't see it and stepped in it and tracked it through the house. Ugh. Talk about a bad mood! But I love her and she can't help it . It was on path to the door, she just didn't make it. I don't know what to do. been feeding her boiled chicken and rice, a little boiled beef for variety and mix a little kibble in.

    Any thoughts?

Here is the Great Dane Lady's program for getting rid of Giardia:  http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/feed_program_for_giardia.htm

Safe-Guard is OTC and is the same as Panacur.

Plain (not spiced) canned pumpkin will help to firm up the stool.

Is the vet finding parasites or just treating for the easiest thing to treat?  A lot of things can cause loose stool -- have you done a blood panel (a senior) to see what's going on?

Have you changed food?  Tried adding a bit more fiber to the diet?  (pumpkin, even a bit of metamucil, or cooked/mashed veggies?).

I'd be a bit unhappy that the vet is doing the same thing over and over with no resolution.  Maybe time to check out a good holistic vet?

Forgot about pumpkin. I'll try that. MEanwhile, I take my chow to her vet tonight for vaccine and I'll talk to her doctor, who is the owner of the clinic. He's in great demand so I'll use the opportunity to talk with him.

I found one vet listed on line as a holistic vet in my area and she wasn't really holistic, I found out. I live between Pottstown and Quakertown, PA, if anyone knows of one in this area.

Off topic--Talk to your vet about getting titers done instead of vaccines if possible.  Have you read about Willow and what she's going thru possibly due to vaccines--and she hasn't even been what would be considered over vaccinated.  It's possibly messed up her immune system badly.

I hope the diarrhea goes away, been there done that many a time.
