    There's something wrong with Cherokee...

    *Sigh*

Yesterday afternoon I noticed she was a little restless. She was laying in a very cramped corner of the living room, trying to get comfortable. I figured it was just where she was laying, so I called her out, but she did the same thing in the middle of the living room. I've been suspecting she has arthritis, so I kind of just assumed it was that, although it still weirded me out a little. I took her with me when I had to go out, because something just seemed "off" and I didn't want to leave her. When we got home, she seemed fine, acting normal, laying down normally, etc., until late last night when she seemed restless again, and then today she's been doing the same sort of thing, and a couple times when she's gone to sit down, she lets out the teeniest of whimpers, and won't lay down all the way.

For some reason I immediately thought of this fish I cooked for her a couple nights ago..it was a frozen boneless tilapia fillet that I threw in a skillet and fed her in her kibble. When I picked up her bowl the next morning, there was a teeny little needle-like BONE in the bowl. I mushed the fish up, so I'm really not sure how I missed the bone... Cherokee's accidently eaten cooked bones several times in her life, and never had any sort of issue (and she eats raw bones often with no problems), but never fish bones that weren't canned. I kind of have a hard time believing she'd have a problem with a bone...buuut who knows, especially if there was another that was as thin as the one I found. So that's one option..a fish bone lodged in her intestines or something... But it seems like she'd be having bloody diarrhea, maybe? And she's not.. I can't say for sure when the last time she pooped was, because she basically just goes outside at will, but I just cleaned up the poop outside, which I also did 2-3 days ago, and there weren't any abnormal looking piles that could've been Cherokee's.

Another thought I had was UTI, and since she was dribbling a teeny bit of urine this morning I noticed, which she has NEVER done, that seems semi-likely (but I figured if she's otherwise in pain, that might happen to?).. except it seems like if it was a UTI, her bladder, or another part of her urinary tract might be tender if I push on it? It's not.. she fell asleep a few minutes ago with me pushing all over her abdomen, pelvis, and down near her vulva...and if it hurt, no way she would've fallen asleep..or otherwise not pulled away. If just SITTING hurts, then you'd think someone poking and prodding would hurt? She seems to be peeing normally..not too often, not straining..but again with the going in and out as she pleases..so I've been keeping a really close eye on her today, with the door mostly closed, and so far I've seen her pee once (she had probably been out before I got up though), and it seemed normal enough.

I can't really think of anything else.. It seems to me that it's not any kind of joint pain, but I can't say I'm positive... I know, I know, vet, but I don't have a car today. I can call my sister to come down and drive us if absolutely necessary, but she has a two year old and is in the process of packing her house to move this weekend, soo.. I don't really want to call her. I could probably walk to the vet, but I'm a little afraid that would cause Cherokee more pain, considering I have no idea what the problem is.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas, or symptoms to look for if it's one of the above things, or any other info until I can get her to the vet.. unless I decide it's an emergency, and then I'll figure out a way..

    Thanks.

A UTI would be my first thought; symptoms can vary a lot and pushing on her bladder may not cause pain, but leaking is a very common symptom.  If it hurts to pass urine, she may not ask to go out until she really needs to urinate, so she may go less frequently instead of more often. I was also wondering if stones would cause these symptoms?  I'm sure Callie will be along with more ideas, but I'll be sending healing vibes. I know how worried you must be and hope you can get her to the vet soon; {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}.

Is she walking normally or limping or favoring one of her legs?  Is she having trouble getting up or laying down?  These are all of Willow's arthritis acting up signs.

However, the restlessness is what she normally does when she's in pain from something.  BUT, not the arthritis pain, she normally is much more still when that's bothering her.  So, I'm thinking it's something else.

Willow's also had some pretty bad UTI's and never showed much pain when the touched her belly.  She just had a hard time holding it.  You could try just catching some urine in a container and seeing if you see any blood specks.  There were plenty of times when just looking as she went I thought she was OK and then when I caught it realized she wasn't.

COULD BE ANY NUMBER OF THINGS.  I WOUD SAY GET HER TO THE VET AS SOON AS YOU CAN. GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR GIRL.

Both Willow and Jessies_mom had really good suggestions.  The first thing *I* thot of was catching a sample just to LOOK at it and sniff it.  If she's not going often, and it's a uti, then it's going to be dark, smelly and strong and you *may* see blood or flecks in it.  VET ... NOW.

Re a UTI -- some dogs will drink TONS to dilute it so it doesn't burn as bad, other dogs will drink less and go less because it burns -- it's a personality thing.

You won't cause pain by 'pressing' with a uti -- now, if the bladder or kidneys are infected THAT could cause pain.

BUT at the same time, I'd also wonder if the position to squat to pee isn't painful because of arthritis.  BUT if she avoids going, she could *cause* a UTI by holding it too long.

I think I've told you to try this before -- maybe not.  Get her in front of you -- either standing or lying down.  Hold your hand out flat -- and very slowly pass your hand over her spine from the top of her head to her butt, almost but not quite touching her.  Leave a tiny airspace (she's fluffy so touching the coat is fine -- just don't have your hand close enough to rest on her skin).

But feel for hot areas or cold areas.  Take your time -- really concentrate and try only to feel for hot or cold air under your hand.  If there is an inflamed area -- you *will* likely feel it.  It's kind of amazing.

Then go further -- down her legs, near her knees, ankles -- and then see if you can get her to roll over a bit and see if you feel anything abnormally warm (or cool) over the abdomen, inside of the groin/legs, etc.

Just trying to find inflammation or cold (cold is areas where there may be a lack of circulation -- lack of adequate blood flow because some area nearby may be too warm).  It can sometimes help you to find soreness you wouldn't otherwise find.

A fish bone could be problematic -- it could have punctured something or caused bleeding.  (make sure you check her poop -- if it's abnormally dark, or black -- again, that's a "vet NOW" thing).

If you have a drug/grocery store nearby get a bottle of green alcohol.  It's got wintergreen oil in it and it's cheap.  Use that to massage places like knees, hips, lower back or any place you suspect is uncomfortable.  The more you rub the more heat you'll create with the oil.  It won't hurt, might help a lot.  And if she improves after a massage it WILL tell you something.

Get her to the vet as soon as you can tho -- it's warranted.  But how much of an emergency?  You'll have to judge that.  But looking at a caught urine sample -- if you look at it and say "YUCK -- I can't even get close to it because it's soooooo stinky!" -- that's a dog that needs a vet a.s.a.p.  If there is blood -- vet NOW.

But it's those little things that tell you she's "off" -- that's the best reason to take her to the vet -- do it as quick as you can, but don't strip a gear.

One more test -- do you know how to test the "capillary refill" time?  Lift her lip and see if her lips are pink.  Now if she has dark spots on her gums that may be hard, but still -- I've seen dogs with dark gums that are "pale" under the darkness.  That's bad.

Their gums should be the color of ours.  Pink.  But in any event -- take the tip of your finger and press hard on the gum for about 10 seconds.  Release -- does the color snap right back to pink?  Or does it take a few seconds to return to colr?  If so that's BAD -- VET NOW.

If the gum is just plain "pale" -- VET NOW.  Those are all tests for anemia or potential internal bleeding -- for some reason if their gums are abnormally pale -- that's dangerous.

I hope you come back Chelsea because it's 1am here and I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight until I get an update!!

    How's the patient???

Sorry Lori! Hopefully you're not still up because of this, lol.

I should know by now that any problem Cherokee has disappears as soon as I post about it (you'd think I'd learn to post earlier!). That's not to say I'm assuming she's perfectly fine, I'm not. I'm still assuming there's something going on, but she hasn't seemed to be in pain at all again. Certainly there's been no whimpering while getting up or laying down, which is what really freaked me out, and she jumped on my bed a few times today, so I really don't think it's an arthritic thing. She's peeing often, but not TOO often. I think she's gone 4ish times today since I woke up, and like I said earlier she probably went out before I woke up (she tends to get up for a bit with whoever's up first in the house, and then when they get boring or leave, she comes back to my bedroom and goes back to sleep). That doesn't seem abnormal to me, neither to much nor too little.

My plan is to catch her pee first thing in the morning and check it out...and if it doesn't look (or smell! apparently) good, hopefully I can find a way to get her to the vet (I can't see myself lugging my cousin's 5 year old and 6 month old to the vet with my aggressive-towards-vet-staff dog, but maybe I can get my sister to hang out with them for a bit, or ??).

For now she doesn't seem to be in pain, and it doesn't feel like an emergency, so that's good enough for me. Though I'm probably a little too laid back about health-related things sometimes, soo hopefully now isn't one of those times...

    Thanks everybody.

Oh, good.  It actually could just be arthritis.  Willow will wimper every so often and then not do it again for awhile.

    Stay well, Cherokee!

    How did today go?

    • Gold Top Dog

She honestly seems perfectly fine today.. She's peeing normally, I caught some this morning and it looked and smelled totally normal. She's not showing any signs of pain, or restlessness. She had a totally normal poop, so I'm not really worried about any kind of bone-puncture.

She woke me up at 5 o'clock this morning because my bedroom door was closed (which I did so she wouldn't be able to pee without me knowing), so I let her out and followed her because I thought there might be something wrong, and she just went outside and layed on the patio! I think she just wanted to be on "possum-watch", and was frustrated that she was closed in my room. She's a twerp, that one...

I really don't know what to think. I don't understand why if she had joint pain she was jumping on and off my bed no problem (when her unwillingness to jump sometimes is what made me think she was getting a little arthritic), but I don't know what else would have come and gone so fast? a UTI would surely be getting worse, not disappearing?

Oh, I hate mysteries.. I've never wanted so badly for her to be able to TALK!

Willow gets like that though too Chelsea.  She's fine zooming and acting like a pup one day and then another she could not want to move around much.  It all depends on the level of pain for that day.
