Plastic and skin funk

    Plastic and skin funk

So... I have this Chinese Crested thingy. Ena is having skin issues. All down her back, where she sweats, she's broken out. I've been on it, double time, for two weeks, now. Every evening, I wipe her down with a warm, clean washcloth, then dot each bump with tea tree oil. It's helped, some, but we're just living with doggy acne. Part of it is age, and part is probably hereditary. I believe that part is diet, so soon, she'll be off of kibble and grains. I'm keeping her skin covered while we're out (because I will NOT put off socialization for anything!), so people aren't touching her with their dirty hands.

Today, I left her home when I went to the beach. I really was disturbed about it, but she loves to swim, and I'm afraid the sand and bacteria in the water might irritate her sensitive skin. I called a friend of mine, and I was telling her how I felt bad about leaving the puppy, and she randomly asked what I feed out of. Stainless and ceramic, of course! My dogs have always eaten from stainless or ceramic, or regular dinner plates (for Emma, who is spoiled, and doesn't like food in her whiskers). Then, she got all deep, and asked what Ena's crate was made of. DUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLASTIC!!!!!  I keep the bedding in it clean. I wash everything twice a week (partially because *I* have inhaled allergies). This week, I bleached and scrubbed her crate, because she pooped in it. If a plastic bowl can cause chin "acne", though.... why couldn't a plastic crate cause acne along the spine? Of course, she's nekkid in her crate!!! She's getting a new crate ASAP.

I think it's funny that I never thought of the crate being a potential problem.... plastic sensitivity. Maybe it'll help somebody that has a dog with skin issues.  Maybe it'll help Ena.... PFFT. Anything that makes it better is good, with me. I know that skin is sore!

I wouldn't be afraid to take her to the beach -- folks like me with psoriasis and dermatitis'ssss of all different types get told ALL the time to walk in the surf b/c the salt is good for the skin!!

It's mostly the bacteria and the touching and playing with other dogs that makes me nervous. There's the risk of sun burn, too. Mostly, I'm a worry wart, and I'm being influenced by a worry wart. I've taken her at least a dozen times, but right now? Her skin is pretty sore and gross. I'm trying to avoid irritating it. I gave her a good, soothing bath, this morning (with heavy conditioner on the furnishings, to help keep them from breaking, and ridiculous amounts of rinsing), and didn't want to.... ruin that effect, LOL.

Emma needs some Emma time, anyways. We just brought the "old dogs", Emma and Ali (the tri Pit that matches her) and they had a great time.

Seems like you can't catch a break with dogs; poor Ena. I think Chinese Crested's are adorable. She may need an oral antibiotic to clear this up; Simplicef is only once a day and works well for skin infections. I agree that keeping her home when you went to the beach was for the best. I'll be sending healing thoughts; give her some cuddles for me.

She just finished a course of Clavamox, for her skin. It's an issue, in the breed. She's just that age, I guess, and they're super sensitive. Today, she got another good bath, with ridiculous conditioning of the furnishings and tea tree on the skin.... She's a wonderful mess! I love her to peices.

I had a dog who was allergic to the universe.  My holistic vet had me feed and water her only from Pyrex glass bowls.

Emma is allergic to the universe, too. She can't eat any dog food available, aside from a couple of brands of premade raw. Something about the vitamin mixes or the processing... she just pukes it right back up. Scented stuff, shampoos, fabrics irritate her. I'm used to that. I think I just wasn't expecting it from the healthy puppy, LOL. She's not unhealthy, at all, just sensitive and at an age where the immune system takes a dip. She's teething something terrible, and learning everything. She also has no hair, so... I'm sure that doesn't help. It does appear to be getting better. I'm keeping that sweaty strip cleaned up, and putting a smidge of tea tree oil on each bump.

I feel for you, allergies are tough.  I wish I knew a lot more when I had my dog.   I know nothing about Chinese Cresteds, but I'll bet you're right, hair would really be helpful.  I hope she gets past it soon.
