occasional morning vomiting of bile

    occasional morning vomiting of bile

Our dog occasionally vomits in the morning...it's always yellow, frothy bile.  I used to attribute it to giving her a certain type of canned food with her dinner, but since I stopped that, that cannot be the problem. I'm starting to suspect that she has some gastritis...I have the same thing.  I am going to try giving her a late night snack (any suggestions as to what to give her, because getting her to eat Kibble is difficult unless she is really hungry or I doctor it up).  Also, is there a probiotic or enzyme of some sort that would be good for her tummy?  I'm going to try going that route first and see if it helps, but I am suspecting she may need to take something like Pepcid.  It's strange, because she never seems to want to eat in the morning (whether she eats dinner at 6 or 8 at night) but she doesn't always vomit.  I'd say, she will go a month or two and not vomit at all, then she will do it 3 times in a week, and then not again for a while.  I did take her to get checked out once after an episode, and there was nothing at all wrong with her.

Of course, she ALWAYS vomits on my carpet, even though she is about a foot away from the kitchen floor.

Have you offered yogurt to her? Mine get a heaping TBLS of plain yogurt every morning on their kibble. You could try that in the evening or try a few spoons of chicken and rice (that you have previously cooked and mixed) last thing at night.

Could you push her dinner back, and give her a mid-day lunch? Pirate eats at 8AM, 2PM, and 8PM or else his tummy gets empty and he'll throw up bile.

This is often the direct result of a dog's stomach being too empty, so a late night snack will probably do the trick.  A yogurt with active cultures (and no sweetners) will provide probiotics and is a way to "doctor" kibble.

This could mean that she is usually nauseated in the morning from the bile, but usually not enough to vomit.

What kinds of kibble have you tried?

She has eaten lots of different foods...right now, she is eating Eagle Pack Holistic Fish formula mixed with Nature's Recipe Easy to digest Lamb, rice and barley formula.  It was the best food I could find in PetSmart  http://www.naturesrecipe.com/DogProductDisplay.aspx?p=Dogs/Easy_dryLambRice  ....I have to drive 30 miles each way to get the Eagle pack and then the store I buy from is grossly overcharging for it.  I know, because I used to sell it online previously.  It's nearly impossible to find a decent kibble around here, to be honest.

She has also previously eaten Blue Buffalo in several different formulas (turns her nose up at it now) and Eagle Pack Lamb and Rice or the duck formula, but she got fussy with that as well.  She will eat anything if I give her canned food mixed in, but unless I get Eagle Pack canned food, she gets loose stools.  I have several cases of Merrick canned foods in my garage right now!  She also gets smelly gas and runny poo from foods that are chicken formulas.  Even if we give her straight boiled chicken, she can literally clear the room.  Lamb, fish or duck she is good with.

I fed her dinner to her at 8PM tonight, since she ate her breakfast today at around noon.  I am going to give her a little bit of canned pumpkin tonight at around 10 or so, and plan on buying some plain unsweetened yogurt at the store tomorrow.  Hopefully, that will work. I'm also wondering if putting peanut butter in her Kong was bothering her belly, so I will stop doing that and perhaps put some good canned food in there instead with a treat in the middle.

Take a look at some of the digestive aids available from B-Naturals:

    • Probiotics can help replenish the friendly bacteria and eliminate the pathogenic bacteria in the intestines. There are two strains that may be particularly good for dogs: Lactobacillus sporogenes (available at Amazon) and Enterococcus faecium, a strain that is native to dogs. Several canine probiotic supplements, such as Jarrow Formula's Pet Dophilus Powder, contain Enterococcus faecium. You can also use products made for people, available from your health food store or department.
    • Prebiotics help support the beneficial bacteria in the intestines, which may help with digestive disorders. Larch arabinogalactan is a form of soluble fiber that is frequently used as a prebiotic, found in supplements such as Vetri-Science Arabinogalactan Powder and Arabinogalactin. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are another form of soluble fiber used as a prebiotic that is often included in  probiotic supplements.

well, it seems that feeding her later, and giving her an evening treat right before bed has cured the pukies.  She still isn't eating particularly well...I'm not sure why.  I think she doesn't care for her kibble...she'd snarf down an entire ham sandwich if given the chance, so I really think she hates her food....again.

I am glad to hear that the "pukies" have been eliminated.  I hope that you can find a food she likes.

Also, if your Petsmart carries the Proplan line, you may want to try their Salmon/Brown Rice formula.

Hopefully, you can land on a food she likes.  Good luck.
