    vaccination reaction

I recently had my puppy get their second set of shots at about 14 weeks. This included at least 2 injections which covered Rabies, Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis (CAV-1), Parainfluenza, and Leptospirosis. About a week after the shots the puppy started developing a large lump at the injection site. This is now golf ball sized. The puppy is an Irish Wolfhound and now 40 pounds and rapidly growing. Still, this is a very noticable and defined lump. The puppy seems fine although the area is mildly tender to touch. Food intake is fine and the pup is a bundle of energy. My Vet says that this lump is an unusual but not really rare side effect of the shot. She tells me it will probably go away on its own over 3 or 4 months. If not it can be surgically removed when she is spayed. I don't know what to think! Does anyone have any similar experiences?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Man, that was a TON OF HUGE SHOTS for 14 weeks!! Rabies at that age??? holy cow!

My holistic vet taught me to do the following.  It helps the body reduce the trauma at that site of injection:

Pick up the skin and any flesh you can across the lump in your first finger and thumb and let it snap back (like you were 'plucking' this).  Do that gently but firmly at least 2 times a day -- do it a few times each time altho if the dog shows discomfort stop for that time and continue later.

Essentially you are stimulating the circulation of that whole mass/area getting the body to 'move thru' the remnants of the vaccines and adjuvant.  It should begin to dissipate and make it smaller.  Usually you can get it to go away doing this.

NOTE WELL the exact location of this reaction -- *DO NOT* let the vet vaccinate in that same spot ever again.

You might want to search thru the archives here -- there is a lot of information on vaccinations that has been posted recently.  In honesty, I'm concerned that the vet so heavily vaccinated this pup on ONE day.  Particularly with such heavy-hitting vaccines as lepto and rabies (when just the basic puppy shots with parvo, distemper, etc. are already a huge drain on the immune system).  You may want to read up on that.

I agree with CVallie 110%.  Because my golden retriever, KayCee had a SEVERE reaction to her set set of annual vax 6 years ago at age 2 1/2, my vet only gives her rabies, and every 3 years at that...even tho our city and county say every year.  He was pretty sure it was the lepto part of the vax that caused the reaction==we almost lost her to huge hives, swollen eyes and ears and temp of l06.9.

Our vewt is now on a 3 year program for vax, except of rcity.county law required every year.  But I always get Honey's rabies vax at a different time, never as a "lump" vax.  Also, I never put put flea stuff on them withing a cople of weeks of vax, within a week of Interceptor heartworm pills.  I hate giving her stutt (I now longer give her her lepto as there has only been one case here, and no Lymes has ever been reported, so she doesn't get Lymes either.  I just think spacing things out is best.
