Sweet dog with Distemper : (

Hi....I'm new here, but joined because you guys all seem so supportive!!   We found out that our 5 month old puppy has respitory distemper yesterday.  We adopted him from the public shelter about two weeks ago (he is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met.), and he developed the normal kennel symptoms.  We took him to the vet, and he told us that the kennel cough had developed into pneumonia and sent us home with some Clavamox and one other medicine.  He started to look better, but stopped eating as much and we had to really watch him to make sure he was still drinking.  Then all of the sudden he started going downhill, coughing A LOT and having a really hard time breathing and a very runny nose.  So we rushed him to the vet early yesterday morning and they told us that he had either the worst case of pneumonia that they had ever seen or distemper.  They hooked him up to IV's and told us that if he didn't show improvement overnight we'd probably have to put him down.  Thank God by yesterday afternoon when we went to check on him he was breathing better and she said that he will probably pull through.  Now we're just waiting for the call that we can take him home.  Does anyone here have any experience with respitory distemper?  We've read a lot on the internet about how deadly it typically is and how hard it is for them to recover.  Any advice and good thoughts would be great!  Thanks so much

     Leonidas!

I'm at work but I'll do a bit of looking when I get home tonight -- and I will send you some info on things you can do to help the respiratory symptoms, etc.  If you can, go and get some slippery elm powder this afternoon (have it on hand for before he comes home).  Also get some honey (unfiltered is better, but grocery store honey is fine) and lemon (fresh is best but RealLemon will do).  I'll teach you how to make an easy cough syrupt -- not a supressive syrup just soothing (the big deal is to get the yuck out of the lungs).

Any health store will usually either have slippery elm in bulk (sometimes in a 'tea';) or at least they'll have the ground root in capsules.  It's a GREAT anti-inflammatory for the lungs -- will also soothe the stomach.

Also at the heatlh store pick up some plain chammomile tea (you can get it at the grocery store but PLAIN chammomile -- nothing with other things in it -- you see it with vanilla, etc. and you just want *plain* chammomile -- it will also settle the stomach)

You may also want to grab some baby food (yep Gerber or Beechnut is fine) -- Get lamb, beef, chicken or turkey (pass on the ham one) and I'd also get a couple of two packs of yams or green beans or mixed veggies.  In order to get him started eating again

Whle you are at the grocery store and in the baby aisle -- get one of those syringes they give baby meds in -- like a big fat syringe without a needle.  You can actually give him baby food by syringe -- and often if you do it right, you can apark the appetite.

Will help you more later, but I can't do much at work but at least you can have the stuff on hand.

That's my sweet boy! Making a full recovery! Thanks everyone for the kind words! I get to pick him up from the vet here in a few hours and am VERY excited to see him!

The vet called me this morning to update me on him and she said that he is just full of energy and has made a complete 360! He wants to play and is wagging his tail and his nose is beginning to get moist again!

    WOO HOO!!!

I'll update ya'll on how he's doing once I get him home!

What a handsome boy. I am so glad he is better. Distemper is highly contagious. If you haven't already I suggest you let the shelter know what has happened. Oh, and welcome to the board!

I just picked him up from the vet and he is doing SOOOOOO good! he's back to his old self (how he was the first few days i had him before he was sick). It's crazy how one can be so sick one day and awesome the next day. he really made a total 540! he's acting like a normal puppy, which really excites me :-) he hasn't coughed once since i picked him up! i am just sooooo excited that he is feeling better!

I thought I'd give you guys an update. Leo is doing absolutely amazing!!! A week after taking him to the vet he has made a complete recovery! He is acting like a normal puppy. He is full of energy and never wants to stop playing! He has gained some crucial weight and his nose is wet again (lol). Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers!
