    Anal Gland Problems

Just this week my oldest dog had to be put down due to anal gland cancer. A couple days later I noticed my Sassy dog licking her butt like crazy. I took her to the vet and it turns out she has a ruptured anal gland. She had to be sedated and treated for that. When I went to pick her up the next day I brought Jack along to have his butt checked out, since there seemed to be a trend. Thankfully his glands were okay.

I had no idea that Sassy's glands were impacted before she started attacking her butt. Her stools were normal and the licking only went on for a couple days before she was treated.

I've read that a low fiber diet may lead to gland problems. Has anyone tried a high fiber diet to prevent this? Would anyone have any suggestions? I'm a bit paranoid about my dogs' butts now. Tongue Tied

My dog Woobie has anal gland issues.  Luckily, never ruptured or infected, but I keep a pretty close eye on them since the first time they really caused trouble.  He was having to be expressed by the vet almost every 2 weeks.  Since increasing his fiber intake and adding 2 tsp. of arabinogalactan powder to his food daily, he hasn't needed to be expressed since Christmas.  I LOVE the stuff.  I think it's magic and I'd sell my left kidney to get it if I had to.  It's made a huge difference in not just his anal glands but he's less itchy and his ears don't get yeasty like they used to.  It's made a huge difference!
