    A heat question. (Kle1986)

Ok Lillie is 16 months old. I was wondering when is she going to come in heat? My first 2 setters I had came in exactly at a year old. Should I be worried about this? Do I need to take her to the vet?

And for those wondering why she isnt spayed yet is because I still have that dream of trying to start showing.

Depends on the lines, I know some dogs that have not coming into season until between 18-24 months.  I would check after that (as well as monitor for health in the mean time)

It is not uncommon. In fact, my beagle bitch comes in every 18-20 months. I would not worry until she is 2, maybe even 2 1/2. I have heard of bitches not ever coming in and some that come in once and never again, but those are few and far between. Are you sure she has not had a silent heat?

Would males hang around if she had silent heats?  Cuz if so then no she hasnt had any of those. I am the only person in our neighborhood that has female dogs. Everyone else has males.

So as far as I know she hasnt ever been in heat. I watch her like a hawk.

Wow this is interesting!  I didn't know a dog could wait so long.  Mine came in around 9 months and every 5 months thereafter until she got spayed.... figures.

    ETD:Oops, I already said that!
Have you had her thyroid checked? That can sometimes throw seasons out of whack.

Lillie came in right after I posted this. So now I'm not worried anymore!! She was actually very good those 3 weeks. I thought it would be a pain but she didnt mind being cooped up in the house or being leashed all the time.

Yeah, it's really not that bad unless you also have an intact male in the house.

Now at least you don't have to wonder if there is something wrong with her. Big Smile
