Allergy Shot Side Effects

    Allergy Shot Side Effects

I took Abbie to the vet the other day for an ear infection and he gave her an allergy shot. Since then she's been acting weird. She is famished all the time and normally she is a very sensible eater. She takes her time and eats only until satisfied. Both girls are fed very well, I home cook and they get Orijen kibble. There is no shortage of food in this household. She's just acting like she's starving all the time and almost bit my daughters hand when she was giving her some of her turkey earlier today. Any thoughts - should I be concerned?? Anything else I should watch for???

Sounds like it was a steroid shot? Steroids make you hungry, thirsty, hafta pee, and can't sleep. Those are very, very common side effects.

She has pee'd on the floor several times since then. (Thankfully we have tile floors) She doesn't come and ask to go out either. No more allergy shots for either of my girls! Thank you!

It's unfortunate some vets still call them that "allergy shots" or "itch shots" -- like it's not steroid.  It reduces the inflammation but the long term effects are tough.

But they don't do anything really to prevent allergies -- they aren't antihistamines or anything -- just to reduce the inflammation that the allergies may cause.

You might want to give some milk thistle for a while to help detox the liver a bit.  And yeah, everything Jennie said.

I give Trudy actual allergy shots from serum, no steriods. They are mixed by her dermatologist.

I am sure you got a steriod shot.

How long do the effects normally last?  At night she really acts wierd, panting and wild eyed........ I don't like this at all!!! Is Milk Thistle a supplement that I can get anywhere??? How is it administered?  She's not itching, but it's not worth the side effects. I can't imagine dogs being on these shots regularly!!

Milk Thistle is an herb. You can get it in capsules, at Walmart. One capsule, twice a day would be a lot, but not too much for her. It should help her liver deal with the steroids.

Steroids make me not itch, and not hurt (I had a big reaction to some seaweed bloom at the beach, broke out in hives, and ended up with tarsal tunnel, at the same time). The inflammation was GONE. The side effects were too much, though. I won't take them, again, unless I have to.

Sassy reacted the same way when she took Pred and that was only the oral kind and I think the shot is usually stronger. It's a crazy kind of medicine. I watched it work a miracle when we couldn't clear up a serious infection, but was really happy to be able to stop giving it to her after the 2 wks were up. It's not fun having a 75 lb dog empty her bladder on the rug Tongue Tied

From what I remember, yes it can cause aggression. I was especially worried about it because my 2 already have "issues" with each other. Just my hunch, but I'm betting it makes them generally more agitated and hyper which might exhibit itself thru aggression. Hang in there.  Hopefully things will taper off in the next couple days.

Oh, yes. Emma was far more aggressive, on Pred.
