So Here We Go With Hypo-Thyroid (I hope)

Wolfie didn't end up getting the eye surgery in December. His eye cleared and we decided to wait and see. Since then, the wart has grown and is causing irritation. It  will be removed tomorrow.

I ran a blood panel on him last Thursday and the vet called me Friday night. His T-4 is low. She mailed the results that night but I just got them yesterday and his cholesterol is also elevated. Neither are severe. He has NO clinical signs of hypo-thyroid. His coat is magnificent, skin is healthy, weight perfect, no behavioral changes at all, and really he's just an absolutely beautiful mature dog, with an excellent temperement.

So, I'm thinking that this is probably hypo-thyroid that has been caught before the clinical signs. My current plan is to run another T-4 tomorrow and if it is again off, do more sophisticated testing.

What else should I do? Or does that cover the bases??

I'd get a full thyroid pannel done.  Send to MSU which is the "gold standard" of thyroid tests.  Important to know is the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) number.  If this is low, it means his body is trying to generate more, but can't.  There's plenty of info on the 'net, so just google.  More than you ever wanted to know!

I agree about getting the full panel run and sent to MSU. It costs a little bit more, but if you're going to draw the blood, might as well get the full reading on it.

    Thanks.
