I was wondering if this is true!

i have been told a few times that dogs with short coats sheed more then dogs with long coats is this true? im thinking in some cases yes but over all no anyone know for sure?

It varies by breed, and sometimes, by individual. I know that in PRTs, the rough coats shed much, much less than the smooths. A lot of longer coated dogs have double coats, and do the twice a year coat blow. Smooth coated dogs drop coat year round.

But you're more likely to notice a long coated breed shedding.  The evidence piles up quicker than a smooth coated breed.  Literally.

Ah yes! This famous myth! I heard about it too... here is my conclusion for you based on other ppls opinions & observation.

People with "short hair" coat dogs typicaly have them for a reason... "less grooming" right?? Well therefore you will tend to find people brushing short coats less than long coats. Ever walk up to a Chihuahua, Lab, JRT and get a hand full of hair? Its disgusting! You touch them and it's like hair just FALLS off! Why? Because that own never brushes/bathes their dog!

I think all depends on the owner because I brush Kayla constantly therefore I never have grooming problems or shedding.

I think a lot of it depends on the food they're eating too. My husky used to shed really bad all year round.  Since I've switched her food so Canidae though she doesn't shed nearly as bad as before.

yes yes I ditto this too...

Brush your dog, and feed your dog good food. That's my motto for all dogs long or short haired.

    Sort of.

All dogs shed, even Poodle and Muttdoodles. The reason some dogs APPEAR to shed less is because a hair will grow to its genetically predetermined length, and then fall out. Longer hair takes longer to grow to its predetermined length and short hair gets to its short length relatively quickly. On top of that, smooth hair dogs have denser hair, ie more hairs per square inch than say, an Afghan.

So a one inch hair will fall out faster than an 18 inch hair, that is why short hair dogs appear to shed more.
