    Could This Be Bloat? (MissMandy)

So Julius pulled a fast one on us last night. I had gone to get him more food, and set the bag in the spare bedroom while I fixed dinner. We keep their food in those air tight dog food containers, and I was going to wait until after we ate to get the boys all excited with pouring the new food into the container.

Anyhow, I came into the room after dinner, and Julius had somehow ripped the top of the bag open and eaten some of the food. I can't be sure how much he ate, because when I poured the bag into the container, it looked to be about the same amount as usual. I went to find Julius, and he seemed fine initially. After about 30 minutes though, the whining started. I took him outside, and he threw up a good handful of undigested food. Then, he came in and drank a ton of water. His stomach did look pretty full.

Aside from the vomiting and occasional whining, he was acting fine, so I went to bed. I woke up this morning and he had thrown up again overnight. I didn't feed him breakfast just to be safe.

This is totally my fault since I should have just put the food into the container right away, and I can't help but be worried that this could be a case of bloat. I initially just thought that he ate too much, but I want to be sure. I have a friend with a Dane, and she's always paranoid about bloating. I figured I'd ask, just to be safe.

With the whining, full belly, and water drinking, it does have me worried. Should I do anything, or just keep an eye on him? I had to come in to work this morning, but I'll be going home at lunch time to check on him.

Hmm bloat I think is something that if not treated within a very short time frame (like 30mins-1hr)can result in some dire consequences. Given the amount of time this was going on I would say it's not likely it's bloat. You can give some Gas-X that will alieviate the gas...

If you tap the sid eof the stomach and get a "drum like" hollow sound that is pretty bad.

If he can pass stool then it's also a good sign.

Phew!! Thanks. That's a relief. Yeah, I wasn't sure about the time frame with bloating - I had just remembered some of the warning signs and got a little worried.

He did poop this morning, so I'm hoping that he just gave himself an upset tummy from being a glutton. I'll be sure to keep an eye on him...and put his food in the container right away next time...Tongue Tied

    Thanks again!
