Licking

    Licking

Both dogs got altered a week ago today.  Today Crusher is licking at himself.  I have to keep telling him to quit.  He does for a half hour or so and then he will start again.  I looked and the incision looks fine.  The shaved area looks red, but more like razor burn or something.  Is he just licking because the hair is growing back?  Should I be concerned?  Is there anything I can do?

Chico also did this same thing. I think they could be either doing this because the hair is growing back or because when they lick things that's how dogs try to heal their wounds.

Chico's area got red where the hair was shaved also, but a week later he developed an infection where they cut him. It looked really gross, sort of like a purple-redish large scar. Antibiotics healed that up just fine though. I'd just keep an eye on things for a little while longer.

Thanks for that.  He doesn't seem to be bothering with it today.  So I'm hoping things are getting better.  He has also been playing quite rambunctiously with Onxy so I don't think he's feeling low.  The scar still looks ok.  But I'll keep an eye on it anyway.

He's probably licking due to either hair growing back, or the slight itchiness as the incision heals. However, the constant irritation/moisture from his licking can cause infection at the site, so if he continues, I'd put an E-Collar or similar collar on whenever you can't directly watch him. It's a lot easier (and less irritating for the dog) to prevent the infection than waiting for it to heal once there is one

Thanks.  I've been watching it closely for any signs of infection and it has healed up nicely.  He hasn't bothered it at all for the past couple of days.
