    heat & spaying questions

Today while in the dog park a woman (a dog walker) asked how old Louise is and if she was spayed.   She's almost 6 months and she's scheduled to be spayed on Monday.   The lady kind of freaked out and said I should move up the spaying right away because she's probably in heat right now - she thought this because a few of the dogs she was walking were sniffing Louise's bum.   I don't think she's in heat, though; I think she was just getting more attention because she was the new dog in the group and everyone lost interest after a few seconds.   It's the same as it always has been.   She hasn't exhibited any other signs either - her urination is normal and her vulva isn't swollen.

But of course now that that lady said something I'm paranoid about it!   If she isn't showing any symptoms, would the vet be able to tell whether or not she's in heat when she goes in for her surgery?   What would happen if she is?

The woman is an idiot.  If she doesn't know the most basic of dog language, she shouldn't own a dog herself.  Dogs sniff each other's backsides because that's where the scent is that tells them all who is who and who is what.

Bitches come into season 6 months - 18 months of age.  Quite honestly, I hold off spaying until at least a year now because spay incontinence is becoming much more frequent and I think bitches reach their full body potential when given time to mature naturally.

But I digress.  No, your bitch is unlikely to be in season.  She was just being examined since she was new pup on the block

Are you saying that your bitches are increasing with spay incontinence, or that you are hearing about more cases of it in general?  At what age is this incontinence occuring?
There are many benefits to pediatric spay, and definately to getting it done around 6 mos (which is the "old 6 month rule" utilized by most uninformed, earlier-schooled vets), such as lower incidence of mammary cancer, ZERO probability of any uterine cancers, and others.
Not to mention the avoidance of unwanted litters because of "oops" pregnancies that occur due to those owners who say "well, I thought she wouldn't come into heat until at least 8mos, that's when her ancestors had" or "I only had them out together for a short while, and I thought she was too young" (I've read of a LOT here in the short time I've been a member thus far)

I think the benefits, both health-wise for the bitch, as well as for the community regarding our immense over-population problem, and many more, far outway a few incidences of "spay incontinence".

:) it is, though, an individual decision, and not knocking you as a dog-owner, who undoubtedly has the best interest of YOUR dogs at heart... but being in rescue, and seeing what "oops" litters affect upon the dog-world, I'm a strong advocate for pediatric s/n, especially for the average-Joe/Mary dog owner.

Please do respond... I'm very curious, truly, if it's your personal bitches whom have had increased occurances of "spay incontinence" or if it's a general that you've heard about... (I wish to be fully informed, being such an advocate for ped. s/n, I would like to have full-spectrum knowledge of anything relating to this subject, so understand that my questions come from wanting to broaden that knowledge). Thank you!   ~ Julia

I find it best to ignore most dog walkers in a park cause their story maybe entirly unrelated to your situation

I have no bitches right now (and don't miss havin em either xD), but more and more of my friends (and my vet) are telling me of Spay incontinence aournd 7-8 months of age.

I also don't like pediatric spays just because I feel it doesn't give a bitch ample time to mature.

Xeph and I could  argue for hours on pediatric spay but it is rare to  have urinary incontenance  prior to 5 years  post spaying,,,but  stuff happens all the time
