Daschund spay question

    Daschund spay question

    Hello.

We just adopted a female daschund named Twitch from my neighbor who bred his pair of (we think) purebred daschunds. She was the runt of the litter, and although she is almost a year old, she is still very tiny. She lived with her parents for about a year, but sadly the neighbor is moving away to a smaller place, and so we agreed to take her.

I want to have her spayed a.s.a.p because there are quite a few horny mutts in the neighborhood. However, I'm concerned because (I believe) they use anesthetic when performing this surgery. She is so tiny, I would hate for her to suffer any ill-effects from this.

Are there any special concerns spaying this tiny dog, or am I being a paranoid "new dad"?

Also- she occasionally trembles (her name is quite appropriate). Is she cold? Is she crazy? Is this something I should be worried about?

Finally- she is fairly well behaved, having grown up around her parents. However, she was never formally trained (i.e. sit, stay, stop peeing on the bed). Is it too late (old dog, new tricks) or is she still trainable?

This is my first daschund, so I would appreciate any advice you other "weiner lovers" might provide me.

She can't be THAT tiny. Toy sized dogs are altered, all the time, with no issues[:D]

My JRT was spayed at 8 weeks. She weighed in at a whopping four pounds. She did fine with the anesthesia.

My smooth Dachshund trembles when she's cold, or scared. A doggy sweater may help[:D] I ended up having things made specifically FOR Teenie, because she walks out of regular sweaters.

It's never too late to train a dog! Teenie was nine when I got her, and she's learning every day. Your little girl is adorable! Good luck!

    You don't give a location.

With that I could do some searching for a small breed vet for you to consult with. I am on a list with a bunch of Toy people and they do say you need a vet used to handling Toys to be safer in surgical procedures )in their cases mainly c sections which are like spay's in mnay respects). So if you like I can ask them for referral's but I'd need at least a state and preferably a city/town to narrow it down [;)]

Because she's the runt, I would recommend getting a blood panel done prior to the spay surgery, but otherwise she should be fine. If she weighs 4 pounds, she should be good to go, as that is the common minimum weight for puppies and kittens. If she weighs less than that, then you should find a vet who is experienced in pediatric spays.

My dachshund weighed 4 lbs tops when she was spayed and she turned out just fine.  As for the trembling, my Zoe trembles with she is cold or scared just like jennie said.

If your dog is still peeing on the bed than she's not housetrained.  I would start crate training immediately if you haven't started already.

    Adorable pup by the way!

Sorry for my late reply! I lost my bookmark and had to google my way back.

Twitch has stopped peeing on the bed, has had her shots, and is scheduled to be spayed early next month. According to the vet she is 8 pounds, so she is giant compared to your pups (size is relative).

    Thanks for the replies.

I hope that Twitch's spay goes well.  When was her last heat?  To minimize bleeding it is good to spay 2-3 months after a heat.  The uterus is smallest 3 months after a heat.

[size=3]Here are some suggestions on how to get a very safe spay. Most of it also applies to a neuter.

Here is a good book for training small dogs:

coco was 5 months, not quite 10lbs when she was spayed and had her hernia fixed.

first two days were terrible for her and me!  but she kept real quiet, even going into her crate for some alone time by herself.

After that... she was bouncing everywhere!  It was hard to TRY and keep her confined! And she's a big baby... I'm talking about crying and whimpering at nail clipping time... before even a nail is TOUCHED! LOL

Everything went GREAT though!  Its been 2 months since her spay, and you cant even see the scars any more!

Have you considered dremeling (using a grinder) instead of clipping?   Go to [linkhttp://www.doberdawn.com]www.doberdawn.com[/link]  (see link at left on that page) for instructions.
