Spay or neuter- have you had your pet fixed?

Both of my dogs are neutered.  I'm pro spay and neuter of any dogs that aren't conformation, temperament, and health proven to improve their respective breeds. A trip through any shelter will show that there are an overabundance of dogs, both purebred and mixed, who need homes.  There is no need for me to add to that.  I also simply don't want an intact male dog in my home[:)]  My female Basset, who has since passed, was also spayed, as have every dog I've had in my lifetime

And, as a note, if they'd do it, I'd be spayed too[;)]

All of my cats are also spayed/neutered, with the exception of the kitten who is too young and who we're going to have to take special precautions with due to a serious heart defect.  And I have a rat that's neutered too[:)]

I intend to be a part of the solution not a part of the problem.

    Well said!!

I had Lenny neutered at 7 months, and Cole was neutered at 8 weeks by the rescue.  No way do I want to be part of an "oops" litter or have behavioral problems like I've seen with other natural dogs.  Plus, both my dogs are mutts/mixes/whatever the PC term is now/ so there's really no reason for them to be breeding, IMO.

4 of our 5 pets are spayed/neutered.  The un-neutered male is a show dog, finished CH in the states, OFA'd hips and will possibly be used by my breeder.

I'm a proponent of spay/neutering to the JQP, however amongst the dog communities there is a lot of talk about the newest studies regarding growth plates and early spay/neutering.  Also there is the issue of spay incontinence that is very real and ;prevalent.

Any puppy from here on out will only be neutered/spayed after skeletal maturity in our house, especially since I deal with a giant breed.

After living 5yrs now with an intact male, I'm not put off by any of the proposed 'negatives', but I also don't deal with anything unusual from him.  He doesn't mark in the house, doesn't have any se*ual interest and in general is just a normal dog.  I think a lot has to do with how the dog is raised.

All my cats and my my older dog is spayed. i did this to aviod the trouble of her being in heat.... Kisses will be neutered on his 6 month birthday lol. Although i love him dearly he was the result of an oops liter, and i jsut dont have the means to raise a liter of pups, and there are many dogs in the area not spayed so better safe then sorry.

I have one intact male - my young Marremma - I'll probably neuter him when he's done growing as I've no intention of breeding him.  His father sired a litter, from which I had intended to keep a female, but that didn't work out.  The boy pup I have now (he's two now) is very much breeding quality but there's plenty of people I know breeding nice livestock guardian dogs.

I have one intact female, a Border collie.  She is one and a half and so far she is the first youngster I've gotten that is firmly on the "breeding quality" track.  But I won't know for sure until she's around four, and has proven herself on multiple types of stock, on large farms and stockyards, and in judged competitions.  So there's lots of time to change my mind, lol!

I think of my animals as spayed and neutered by default, and they have to give me a REALLY good reason not to do it.  And on top of that there has to be a really good reason to breed.  I have had two different intact male Border collies at different times.  I eventually decided that as a novice breeder I didn't need to have stud dogs on site.  Since no one is necessarily wanting to breed to your dog, you can only breed in house and I'm not ready to do that yet.

I really hate having intact animals around.  I like all my nice "safe" spayed and neutered dogs and cats. [;)]

Personally, I think male testes are disgusting to look at!

    What about female testes?

Of my three adult dogs, 2 are neutered.

Hurley (Westie 5 yrs old) was neutered at 7 mos because I didn't want to deal with any terrier issues and his father and brother were notorious for marking in the house.  Besides, he is a BYB pup that we rescued and there was no chance of him reproducing!

Malcolm (Collie 5 yrs old) was just neutered last year, at 5 yrs old.  I bred him once (after health/temperament clearances and a few titles), which gave me Smidgen, and once she passed all of her clearances and earned some titles, I decided it was time to neuter him so he could focus in the obedience ring and she could carry on the bloodline.  He never gave me any problems at home - no marking, no aggression, no roaming ... it was his public life that was suffering -- too friendly to the ladies!

Smidgen (Collie - 2.5 yrs old) intact and just had a litter.  She passed all of her health/temperament clearances and earned a few titles.  I will probably have one more litter from her, then spay her so she can enjoy life without dealing with hormones (and it really gets in the way of  our performance events).  I can't imagine why anyone would WANT an intact dog if it weren't being bred.  It's a pain in the behind, especially with the girls!!
