    Question about after later neuter...

I had posted a while ago about finding a low cost place to neuter my German Shepherd mix puppy and ended up finding one through Spay USA thanks to someone who gave me a link to a site for a specific state that had a link to Spay USA for those who didn't live in that state. I wasn't able to get him fixed at 6 months as I couldn't afford it and didn't get the info, and certificate, from Spay USA until after he was 6 months. He just got fixed on the 21st so shortly before he was 9 months. I've had 2 other male dogs, one that had to be put down because of a bad temperment problem and the other had a medical problem that I couldn't afford to even try to fix so he went to a shelter that keeps the animals for the rest of their life and both of them were fixed at 6 months so I never noticed what I'm posting about.

So, obviously at 8-9 months a male dog is a little more developed than he is at 6 months so his testicles were bigger which means the sack, or skin whichever you call it,  around them was bigger too. When he came home he was really swollen and it looked like he hadn't even been fixed. I kept checking to make sure the stitches still looked good and to see if the swelling was going down. So it's now been a week since he got fixed and he still has some skin hanging there. Is this normal when a male dog is fixed later? Is it still just swelling that will go down? Or is he always going to have something there? If you think I should have it checked out, can it wait as he seems to be doing fine? He's running and playing like usual, unless I confine him to his pen there's no way to make him take it easy. My other dog has to go to the vet in February for her shots so if you think I should have Rio, the shepherd mix, looked at, can it wait until then?  The only reason I'm asking is because I never noticed this with the other 2 male dogs so I don't know if I should be concerned or not.

    Thanks.

depends on the procedure but the swelling will eventuall go down and he will look allmost normal...but try to keep him from licking it...that just aggrevaates the situation

Your pup may very well have a decent amount of skin that will be left for the rest of his life and that is totally normal. Because of their short coats you can easily see a wide variety of skin in the male greyhounds. JJ has far more than my first male greyhound and because of an amputated tail it is much more obvious than in many others I work with at the rescue.

Yep, normal-- some of it will shrink, some won't.  Depends on the dog, depends on whether or not the vet took any extra skin when he did the neuter.

I got my pup from a shelter, and he was also neutered late. There was a period of time where I thought the extra skin would never disappear. It will take several months for the skin to shrink down, but it will eventually...

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I've never had a male dog neutered this late and my previous 2 I never saw that much left hanging. My previous 2, and apparently a breed I'm not meant to have at this point is time seeing as both had some type of issue, were both Dobermans so you would think I'd have noticed it more on them.

Seeing as how big he was down there when I brought him home from the vet, I don't think the vet took any skin with the surgery. It just looks kinda odd though. I guess if he still looks like he does now when he has to go in for his shots, which I believe is in 4 or a few more months, I'll mention it to the vet.

    Thanks again.

Billy had apparently been used as stud ... and let's just say the boy was well endowed.  (he's an English cocker)

I didn't think the sac would EVER shrink on him ...  it has, not as much as on other dogs.  I understand totally -- it 'feels' almost irresponsible, like "SOMEONE is gonna think he's not neutered!!! omgosh!!"  You're right -- it looks downright 'weird'.  To me anyway.
