neutering late?

    neutering late?

I have a 2 year old male Papillon that I just inherited. He is still intact. He isn't at all aggressive, and is generally quite polite and restrained with his sexual advances (not a lot of leg-humping, and he stops immediately if asked to). Pretty much his only annoying male activity is licking himself a good deal, but part of that could be due to dry skin troubles.

I know neutering can be helpful for prostate health as well as avoiding testicular cancer. But I am also used to hearing castration recommended for young dogs "before problems develop."

Would there be any drawbacks to neutering him so late in life?

Nope, none.  Do it.  [:)]  And at 2 years old,  he's not "late in life".  Small dogs live to 10 to 15 years or more.

Hehe I meant late for the neuter :) I had a Sheltie for 14 years before she got cancer - aiming for 20+ years with this guy ;)

Thanks for the tips, as soon as things settle down (we're moving) I'll take him in the vet for a snip.

I had Radar neutered at 2 years old. We havent had any problems since the neutering. Actually, the neuter itself went much better than what I thought it would. So, don't worry. I'd go ahead and have the neuter done.

Nope, no reason not to neuter him. Really, no rush either now that he's passed puberty as long as he's not running around impregnating females. Anytime in the next year is good, in case you're like me and need a couple months to catch up after christmas.
