Can't find her uterus!!!

even missing this on a male dog is possible because both testicles can be retained in the body but they can usuall be felt, or at least one of them could possible so far up in the abdomine that it might be missed....but i have never seen this happen, but I guess it is a possiblity

If the dog was spayed by the early spay (low cost spay/neuter often does a spay when they are like 2 months old -- a laser simply cauterizes the budding uterus and it never develops) then there would be no scar.  The dog SHOULD have been chipped however to indicate the spay, but that depends on the shelter/state.

But you literally can't tell in those cases if a dog HAS been spayed!!

Wow, I didn't know that was possiable.  I would not want to get a dog spayed earlyer than 6 mo. but thats just my openion.

As for chipping, tatooing and all that it seems like most places don't do that when they spay.  I know here it's not a law that the pet has to be chipped but in the city north of me all dogs must be chipped.  I've heard of even clipping the tip of the ear to show the animal has been spayed, forget where they do that.

It's been around for a long time.

imo, most responsible rescues will s/n puppies before adopting them out. Accidents happen all the time, and I wouldn't trust a rescue who lets them go unaltered, contracts are useless the majority of the time. My vet will alter a 5 yo dog and the owner will admit that s/he was adopted on a contract but they moved and didn't have time to do it until now. Sickening, especially when you hear the stories of how Fifi "accidently" got out and turns out pregnant. The rescue also has the option of keeping their dogs until it's done.

Bit of info on the topic -

I'm just surprised by the whole thing.  Maybe she was spayed early on... maybe the people that had her ;previously knew about the demodex and had her spayed right away?  I wonder if that's why she was brought to that clinic as a stray also... because they didn't want to deal with the demodex.  She's so sweet & loveable, I can't imagine anyone giving her up.

I do know in this area is is highly unlikely that a dog would be chipped or tattooed.  It would have greatly helped if someone had chipped or tattooed!  Thanks for the info....

Wow.  I figured evidence of a spay had to be obvious.  Show dogs can't be spayed.  How do they tell?  Apparently, they take the owner's word for it.

My SD works at a vet clinic that has 5 or 6 doctors.  The clinic owner is quite old but continues to practice.  They call him "Quack-a-matic."  Supposedly, he recently tried to spay a cat that ended up being a male who had previously been neutered.

I know I shouldn't laugh at that... but I just can't help it.  It caught me off guard! LOL  I think that's our luck... I was freaking out about having her go thru it and then to find out she was spayed already, that was just the icing on the cake!  She's recovering slowly but surely.  I was really worried yesterday because she would not potty, would not drink or eat but finally we had progress last night.  Just hope this is the last "exploratory" surgery she has to have!

My dog Harley, she's an Akita/Collie Mix. I adopted her from the Shelter when she was 4 months old. When she got to 6 months old, I went in to have her fixed. I was told when I went to pick her up that the Vet couldn't find her Uterus and asked if she had been fixed prior to me adopting her. He said he couldn't find any signs that the previous adopting family had her fixed. So I guess it's possible! I know I was freaking out when he told me about that.

    @bragg1120

I just posted this a little while ago on the "spaying tomorrow - and worried" but I thought I might get a quicker response if I made a new thread....

The vet just called (in the middle of surgery!) and asked how long I've had Trixie, had she ever been in heat while we had her and where did she come from? I answered with, we adopted her in April... we've never noticed her being in heat and I doubt the other person that we adopted her from noticed because she was kept outside in a kennel and she was brought to a clinic as a stray.... then taken to the lady's kennel.

I asked if something is wrong and he says... I can't find her uterus. CAN'T FIND IT?? He said he's going in again, just to be sure and asked if I'd contact the other clinic to see if there was anything on record (they said if she was spayed beforehand, they didn't know but they didn't spay her). I'm waiting, rather impatiently, for a call to make sure she comes out ok..... my question is.... wouldn't he be able to tell before operating? While prepping for surgery, wouldn't there be a scar that maybe I might not notice but he would notice?

I can't believe she had to go through this for nothing. I just called to check on Trixie, she's out of surgery now & resting. Have to call back at 2:30 for more info when she's a little more alert.

I realize this isn't a fresh topic, but it's new to me. Took in to our regular vet a stray female pup that we just couldn't find an home for in for a spay this morning ( best age guess about 10 mo.)  we've had her for 7 mo. & she was well weaned @ initial arrival.  Just got a call from the doc sayin no uterus could be located, scar is about 3 times bigger than typical due to "searching" for it. Surgery fee remained the same, first I've ever heard of & 1st he'd ever seen(not seen)....pretty odd.
