• Neuter or not to neuter. Advice?? Lynsey McGregor Posted : 7/23/2006 1:33:49 PM I am debating whether or not to have my cocker spaniel pup neutered.  The vet has recommended it but the breeder who i got Theo from says that she wouldnt dream of it. Does anyone have any advice on the subject. Im a 'virgin' to this puppy owning business, so any advice gratefully received!!! Its not good to keep and unaltered male, and risk possible pregnancies, thus contributing to the overpopulation of pets.   Now is your pup show quality? If he is and you are planning and showing you cant neuter him because he will be disqualified. If he is possibly show quality then keep him unaltered and see if he can prove himself in the show ring. If he cant, then neuter him.   Again, if he is just going to be a companion you should neuter him. Why does the breeder not want him neutered? • Xebby Posted : 7/23/2006 1:41:06 PM Do you plan on showing your dog? Do you plan on breeding and if you do will you be willing to get health test done first and certifie them with the OFA? If not I highly recomend getting your dog neutered. Several reasons, one is dogs who are not neutered are very prone to prostate cancer. Dogs behavore is slightly clamed when neutered and they are less likely to roam to look for a mate. Once the testostorn is stoped they do not have that urge to chase after female dogs in heat. The one above all reasions is to stop the overpopulation of dogs. Even if you don't see the outcome of your dogs pups it still is possible for your dog to father unwanted pups who will end up in the shelter and more than likely have to be euthanised. Overall it's just better for your dogs health. In addition to the decreased risk of marking and not contributing to unwanted pregnancies, neutering also reduces the risk of life-threatening diseases like cancer. Is she hoping you will show and/or breed him? And, how old is he? Breeder didnt say why not, think she was hoping id breed from him, but i dont think i will.  Theres too many unwanted dogs already out there!! Thanks for advice, will definately neuter now after hearing everyones advice. • jones Posted : 7/24/2006 2:48:30 PM Like so many other aspects of dog health care, there is a lot of conflicting information out there on how early a dog can be spayed or neutered. A lot of shelter pups are fixed very early. We have a member - dvet - who's a vetrinarian and has recently posted that any dog can be neutered as soon as the testicles have dropped. I don't think there's any harm in waiting until he's 6 months old as your vet has suggested - that should work out just fine.   Now... you must post pics of your little one!
