Limping pooch

    Limping pooch

So this afternoon I let the dog out so she can go potty, and when she returns about 5 minutes later she is limping. I can't even imagine what she got herself into that resulted in this happening, and now I'm worried and feel a trip to the Vet might be in order. On closer inspection, she reacted by yelping when I put pressure on her upper leg. That was the only place that I touched that resulted in her visible discomfort. She is still limping, and really trying hard not to put any weight on the leg that is bothering her. She can get up on her chair, and can get up and down the stairs to go outside when she needs to 'go'. My question is this; do I need to get her to the vet asap or should I wait a day or so and see what develops?

Pretty much the saem thing happened to my golden when he was 3.  He went outside fine, came in limping.  I took him to the vet and it was a pulled muscle or strain in his shoulder.  A few days on some light meds and he was as good as new.  There is always the chance you dog injuired the elbow and if the limping keeps up, it is vet visit.

So today hasn't brought any real improvement in Ginger's leg. If anything, she is trying even harder to stay off of it. I actually carried her up the stairs a little bit ago so she could come back inside. (not easy, she's 80 lbs.) Anyway, there is no swelling in the area, but there is a deep red colored bruise on the spot that is tender. She whines while she walks, and I feel so bad for her. Is there anything I could give her that might ease the pain a bit? Also, I'm really feeling like I need to get her to a vet, but would hate to go and spend the money if all the vet is going to do is tell me to try and keep her off her feet for a few days. Any ideas/suggestions? I should mention that this is the first dog I've ever had in my life and am kind of new at all this...

Its a tough call.. sometimes its nothing and will heal in a week or so and sometimes it needs help or it will not heal correctly.  To be honest I would go to the vet.  I brought Bailey in after she limped and whined for 3 days... finally decided to go... and he said just wait it out.  I was glad it was nothing... but man!  I know how you feel, but just in case.  It seems pretty bad from what your describing.  Just be wary of some of the pain meds you may be given.

Just an update. This morning brought no real improvement in Ginger. On my way to class, I called the Vet to see if I could get her in sometime. Well, the Vet is off until Monday and the receptionist told me that if she didn't start showing signs of improvement in the next few days I should consider finding a vet that could see her. Well, long story short, I got home from class and Ginger is actually walking on her leg again. She still has the limp, but she isn't whining when she puts weight on it. She also ate a good bit when I got home. I was worried because she didn't really eat at all yesterday but she's gotten her appetite back so I'm hoping she is on the mend...

Why don't you give her a dose of homeopathic ARNICA MONTANA.  Its first aid for strains and bites etc.  It only cost $5 per bottle of 80 tiny sugar pills.  Just open her gumline  and drop one in.  Don't touch the pilll it will ruin the composition.  I would give her a second and third dose on the next 2 days.  It only takes a second or to make contact, so don't worry if she spits it out after a minute.  But it is sugar and tastes great.

You can get it at a healthfood store.
