    Nail problem

I brought my dog into the vet on Sunday for her usual allergy problems and decided to get her nails cut while we were there. She kicked and flailed so much that one of her nails was cut and she was bleeding. She seemed to be ok after that, but after I gave her a bath today (right after a fairly long walk) she started crying and holding up her back paw. Ever since then shes been laying down on the floor and whimpering. I havent been able to get a good look at it but I havent noticed any signs of blood. Is it normal for a dog to show this much pain the day after a cut nail? Is there anything I give her in the meantime? Thanks for any help.

Hi tko, yes, it is painful when the quik (spelling) is cut and will be kind of bruised until it heals. Most dogs are not that sensitive to it but some are very sensitive. Just keep an eye on the nail to ensure it does not get infected and it should heal.

If the problem continues, I would take the dog backt to the vet for them to deal with.

Inside a dogs nails is the kwick. This is a blood vessel or vein. If it is hit while cutting it will cause temporary discomfort and will bleed. Once it is cauterized it should not hurt for more than a couple of hours. If your dog is still telling you it is painful back there I suggest checking for an underlying problem as a blood vessel cannot bruise the surrounding tissue area by cutting the nail too short....nails are made of hard keritazined epithelial cells that are dead. So...you cannot bruise a dead area...the vein is the only vascular area in the nail. Check for an underlying problem, a cut on the pad maybe?
