    please help Rocco's paws!

Please help! We went to the tennis courts today and took Rocco with us. He is a 90-lb bull-mix, and he ran like crazy. At the end, he started to limp. I took a look at his paws, and the pads are peeling off!! It looks like giant, thick, popped blisters on the front pads of his front feet. He is licking them constantly and looks like he is even trying to chew off the flaps of skin. The pad underneath the flap is not bleeding, but very red and raw looking. he is still willign to walk around, and go outside to go potty, but must be in a lot of pain. Any thoughts???

His paws must be very painful.  Personally I would take him to the vet, as open pads might get infected.  Another suggestion would be Bag Balm or Vaseline to soothe them.  I would try to keep him from licking his paws, maybe wrap them for a time.

If the asphalt was blistering hot that could have blistered his feet.  I would likely have a vet take a look at them.

For tonight, I would cover them with Bag Balm  or even Neosporin "Plus" (to relieve the pain simply) and then put socks on each of his paws (you can tie a bit of elastic or a ponytail scrunchie works GREAT).

Don't let him simply lick all night -- even give him Benedryl to help him sleep (1-2 mg/lb body weight -- so if he's a 75 pound dog, THREE of the over the counter Benedryl capsules is a minimum dose).  That will help him chill out tonight (but make sure he has water!)

The vet will likely give you some Panalog or something to reduce pain and avoid infection -- that's a pretty bad injury.

Thanks so much for the help. The asphalt was not hot, we are here in Seattle and it is a very mild low 60's at best this time of year. Keeping him from licking them is difficult, he has tried to chew off the socks, and just soaks them until he is essentially licking through them. We have a vet appointment thursday bvet just can't get in before them. Glad to hear I can use benedryl, anything else to help pain? He does seem to be sleeping, and walking, luckily.....

White Willow Bark (one cap for a dog about 50-60 pounds should be sufficient short term) shouldn't hurt the stomach too bad and will help pain.

Bag Balm might help a lot and then put the socks over it.  Keep changing them.  You could also wrap in gauze and then wrap in vet wrap NOT AT ALL TIGHT (it's elastic so don't cut off the circulation at all!!)

This has happened to me recently at a tennis court.  I spoke to my vet and he told me the same thing Callie said.

...bag balm or neosporene, gauze pad, and then wrap with vet wrap, until the blister is gone.

He told me to watch to make sure it did not get infected... but it cleared up VERY quickly, in about a day.

I still used boots for a few days after when going outside just to be on the safe side.

I wish there was a way to avoid this, as my dogs love playing at the tennis courts.  I think my one will need to be booted from now on... since this has happened twice already.

Is there a way to help protect their paw pads aside from boots?  It just seems to happen on one paw... but in different places on the paw.  I wonder if this is because of the way he runs... maybe he puts more pressure on one side [sm=uhoh.gif] ???

I dont mind booting him up , and I have boots which are suposedly all weather, but I still worry about overheating in the summer.

Neosporin is what I used on Boss when I first got him. Because he was crated 24/7 and never let outside he had very sensitive feet and even walking on snow cut the pads off all 4 paws up pretty bad. I used Neosporin at night when I put him in his crate and wrapped his feet. Usually by morning he would take one or two off.
