Cut on dogs back paw pad.

Cut on dogs back paw pad.

I'm a new member to this forum.  This morning I went for a walk w/Mac  (my hound/dane mix) and noticed when we came in that his back paw pad had a cut in it, it was not bleeding outside until we came inside(noticed the little blood drops), I did clean it with some water, he doesn't seem in pain in fact it was as if he didn't realize he was cut either. I was wondering if anyone one had some ideas on how to bandage it or what to use for the cut, to ensure it stays clean.  I had called my vet he suggested to bring him in in case he needed stitches but noticed on the forum the majority of the time people were told to just keep it clean and wait for it to heal.  Any suggestions?

My dane does this a lot all we do is clean the cut and make sure bleeding stops then wrap i with that self sticking bandage you can get a petco or petsmart.  His usually heals up in about a day.  Like this weekend he some how got a piece of glass in his foot.  We called the vet and were told to try to get it out if we could and wait to see if it healed on it's own.  If that would have been his first cut on his paw i would have worried a lot more but i know it isn't serious unless it is a huge cut or won't stop bleeding

Thank you for the information.  This is his first cut with us (we adopted him from a no kill shelter in Feb.06) he's 2 and trust me I was worried, my poor baby.  It scared me mainly cause of the bleeding.  Just like humans we bleed alot when its first cut then of course the bleeding stops.  I did see him licking it too so hopefully I can bandage it up for him to ensure he does not lick it.

    Thank you![:)]

No problem it works best if you can get some non stick gauze and put that where the cut is and wrap the bandage around it.  It helps to keep the dirt out when they go outside and all that.  The first time it happened to my dog a rushed him to the vet and he just gave us some animax to put on it and said we could wrap it for a day or so to keep it clean until it started to close up which was about a day.

I use neosporin on cuts.  But, if the cut is deep, see the vet so he can get an antibiotic if it's needed.
