ACL torn. My options?

    Hi-

Go for the TPLO and do it sooner rather than later.  The longer you wait the more arthritis will set in and you've already waited a long time.  Be very religious about doing the rehab afterward and if you can find a place that does canine rehab even better.  For an active dog the TPLO surgery is the best option.  There's a yahoo group called orthodogs which is very active and has a lot of knowledgeable people on it, you might want to join it (it's a very active list so make sure you set your preferences to digest).  There are also lots of websites with great info on TPLO and rehab afterward.  I had a dog have it done about 5 years ago and I know several other people with active working dogs who have had it done too.

    Good luck!

ETA:  Just noticed that this thread is a couple of weeks old - what did you decide?

    Update:

Injury occured 9/2, it is now 10/6.

Sadie still limps heavily and only uses the leg to balance on when standing, and the occasional step.  TPLO surgery is still scheduled for 10/31.

I did check with the doctor earlier in this week to see if the 60 day wait for surgery was a good idea.  He said, "Keep the 10/31 appointment."   Hmmm...    Oh well, from what I hear, he does a lot of them, so he is quite experienced...

Wow.  8 weeks in the crate.

This is from a sheet of questions I faxed him this week:

How long is she to be confined to strict crate rest?  I think of strict crate rest as being in the crate 24/7 and only moving 15-20 feet to pee.

His answer was, "8 weeks" and "correct"!

    Bummer.

Holly was our only dog at the time of her surgery. ;Plus she was sedate bulldog.  So, I never crated her,,but I carried her up and down the steps.  A freind had a chow who did a full flight of steps 3 days after surgery, she is ok for 5 years now except getting old at 11..

Can you separate your other dogs,,maybe take them to a relatives house for a while so she can not be crated all the time?

Davb--I did a THR (hip replacement) on my terrier mix about 2 weeks ago and it's working. It's hard. It's long. I have to hear a lot of chirping and find lots of things for her to do, but we're slowly getting there.

    Good luck.

Yeah, orthodogs is a great resource!

Here are a couple of links to some helpful info:

The first one is especially good and I remember reading it a lot.

You might want to buy/fashion a sling now and start getting used to it.  It's a little awkward at first.

Do you have your dog on some sort of a gluco supplement now?  If not, you might want to ask about starting one asap - I'd be doing anything I could to help lessen the arthritis (which, from what I know, starts about 2-3 weeks post-tear) that in the knee.

Where do you live?  If you live anywhere near CT I can recommend a couple of great places to help you with rehab.
